Jumbo thought A&M money would win him the Natty and didn't put in the work.
How did he not put in the work? He had great recruiting, finished #4 in the country, and was generally a good dude. He happened to play against some of the best teams in the history of football. With this years schedule, and using his buyout money to pay players instead of severance, he probably would have been as or more successful this year as Elko. I hope he's successful wherever he goes in the future.
Bro he lost to App State and went 5-7 in year 5 of his tenure.
This just in: college football coaches occasionally lose games unexpectedly. More news at 11.
Seriously, that game did suck. Terrible across the board - coaching and players. But Jimbo haters love to harp on that one game (while throwing dirty toilet water on 2020, I might add). RC Slocum once lost to SW Louisiana. Fran had lots of WTF games, but I do recall a massive struggle against Texas State in a hurricane game. Mike Sherman lost to Arkansas State in his first game as head coach. I don't recall Kevin Sumlin losing to programs of this stature, but he notably choked away a huge lead in a game that I believe led to his firing, UCLA. And while Mike Elko has not lost any such game or even been threatened in one against such an opponent, he did manage to lose to a God-awful Auburn team with an offense that had not shown any semblance of life up until the Aggies stepped onto their field. I don't recall Jackie Sherrill having problems with teams like this, but admittedly was in high school when he arrived in Aggieland; my first three years at A&M, Sherrill had his teams humming, winning 3 consecutive SWC titles and going 2-1 in the Cotton Bowl.
These games do happen.
