Intentional grounding is not really a penalty. They should tack yards on from the point of the call.

All he's really saying i think is the penalty is likely not much worse than the result of the play on a sack so why not just sling the ball and take your chances . You lost the down either way . It's not always true tho on a short sack especially if in fg range on 3rd down.

It's a penalty, but there are certainly circumstances where a player may calculate that it's to their benefit to commit it. I would say that the risk of an INT is enough to convince QBs to take the sack most of the time.

Similarly, DPI is worth committing if you think you're going to give up a TD. This is especially true in college, where it's not a spot foul.

QB safety is paramount, if they made it more punitive in terms of additional yards, it would encourage QBs to take the sack instead and risk more injuries. That being said, I think they should judge the penalty stricter because they let QBs get away with too much when they are obviously not even attempting to complete a pass. When they get away with that crap, it negates the fact that the defense clearly dominated the play and deserves to be rewarded more than just an incompletion

QB can always just slide if they are trying to prevent injury.

F'd up rule for years. If you throw away the ball to avoid a sack, it's intentional grounding. Chunking it out of bounds into the stands is exactly that.

Yup. No other rule has changed the game so much in favor of the offense. Defenses can pressure and chase a mobile QB around for 5 seconds 25 yards deep…and if chucks it it the LOS suddenly the offense is saved.

They'll never do it because they're "concerned for Qb safety " but this was just a rule change to help offenses score more points and hurt defenses. Sucks

I'm not into this gray area of is it a penalty or is it wrong?

All I'm interested in is MORAL victories!

Thank you. It is not a penalty and this has vexed me for years.

I would agree with some of the comments on this thread. It should be five yards from the spot of the foul. Unless they intentionally want to protect the QB and let him do it to end the play with no punishment.

My proposal….ball must be within 10 feet of a receiver at some point if you throw it. Outside the pocket throwing in the stands is terrible. Make them throw it in play if the defense has gained an advantage. Yes, this will never happen because QBs bring the $$$ and we have to protect them.

Why isn't spiking the ball intentional grounding?
