I couldn't get past the OP, when it said "easily".
I am a generally optimistic Aggie, believe we had a great team this year, and like our trajectory. It's not a all good, all bad kind of analysis that many poster fall into. But....
Let's just accept we had a great, fun season, but simply didn't have all the right pieces in place just yet. Miami peaked and no, we couldn't have "easily" been there. I think we "should" have beaten the sips to end the season (for reasons I already mentioned on these fine boards). But Miami was a better team, and doubt we would have beaten Ole Miss or Ohio State. I'm certain we would have been demolished by Indiana.
Sadly, it's not even necessarily one thing. Just a mix of things.
- Reed - I trust Elko, I'm just a keyboard jockey. But I think Reed has maxed out, and we should have at least opened the position to the portal. Hope Elko and crew prove me wrong. It will be a slice of crow pie I would gladly eat.
- NIL and TP Days - While it was starting to sink in with me in prior years, this year fully sealed it for me. We simply live in a VERY different era of college football now. Follow the money and start the oldest players you can. Look at the average age of QBs for example in the CFP. Happens in most other positions too. I fear every year now the best team is the one that plucked the older, most seasoned players from the TP. Schools with less money are the "JV teams" that feed money school programs. Gone are the days of "coach and student athlete" career development programs (it's why Saban left the game). Point here is, I think we recruit well in the TP, but this year we just didn't have the edge at a few other positions that Miami, Indiana, Ole Miss, and Ohio State had (e.g., linebacker and fullback come to mind).
I'm very optimistic for our chances next year, and to be a highly ranked team year in and out, but simply, this just wasn't our year and in no way could we have "easily" been in the title game this year.
