If Indiana can do it, literally any school can. The playoffs are ultimately going to be expanded to 16 (if not more) so the excuses of having a tough schedule and losing 1, 2 even 3 games in the year will be moot. Elko has shown he can put together a quality roster and recruit well, with the resources and $ we have there is no excuse we can't be the ones at the top.

Yeah, anyone can take a chance on a no-name coach and pick the right players to bring with him. Big name schools don't take chances like that. We could have hired him, but I don't even know if he got an interview. We just did the same stuff we always do.

Hot take. Indiana winning is a fluke. They will go back to being a basketball school. The regular blue bloods will win the next 5-10 championships.

Do you mean like us taking a risk on a coach that went 16-9 in his only 2 seasons as a HC at Duke?

Indiana has an accurate QB! We don't! Well, Hart might be accurate, but how are we gonna know?! Our QB completely crapped the bed at end of season 2 years in a row and somehow he's still our QB.
7-5 in 2026. Ok, I will be optimistic and say 8-4…

Does not take away from what they have accomplished. With the exception of O State and a revitalized tu they are heads and tails above the blue bloods.

He landed at Indiana.

It's pretty clear that most big name schools weren't taking a look.

The idea that A&M is the only one that "missed" this guy is kind of baffling.

Literally every school would take him today, and he landed at Indiana.

It would be like if Bucky lands us a championship in basketball - it would have been a great hire, but also the type of hire that a non-basketball school like A&M would make vs a powerhouse.

I think he's an incredible coach with an incredible team, but I do think there are a TON of overlapping factors that led to this level of success.

The age of his team, how well they gelled, him taking a QB from Cal and that kid blowing the doors off of the sport.

I wouldn't bet against him, but we've seen before (2012 A&M offense) that sometimes things align perfectly and then don't sustain.

Will be an interesting few years.

I still cant process what has happened. If this was a videogame you'd say its fake as hell and quit playing.

Perfect storm of a really good coach bringing in his own guys en mass and the other programs not having mastered how to operate in the NIL/transfer portal era. Cig built a program in a time when you really cant build a program, you just try to buy one every year.

I can't wait for the next few seasons to happen so we can stop with the ridiculous love-fest for Cignetti. Don't misunderstand, he's a good coach but he is no different than a bunch of others.

Time will tell but I tend to agree with these takes. It truly was a magical run for the Hoosiers. Hopefully we can have one as well at some point in our lives! I am interested to see if the Indiana program can sustain and build a dynasty. I'm probably wrong but I doubt they are able to keep it going long-term. Looking forward to watching it all unfold either way!

No it isn't. Its the power of NIL/Portal and money.

That's not a fluke.

My only caveat would be that indiana has a storied tradition of winning NC's in basketball. I really think think that A&M as a whole just doesn't know how to win.

Having the best QB gives you a really good chance of being the best team.

The coach is a small part of it. The money from a billionaire sugar daddy is a less small part of it. The team with the best QB will probably win the championship.

Indiana has the best QB this year.

That's it. That's the recipe.

Who has the best QB next year? I guess we will see.

I don't think it's a fluke, but I don't think they'll be back next year. With an average age of 23, they are going to have to be re-built from scratch.

Indiana has a QB that makes plays and A&M doesn't. It's very likely that if Mendoza played for A&M, we could have won the Natty.

That's what I am saying. We have everything we need to win, if we are not winning because of the QB position, there is no excuse not to make a change and go get or recruit a QB.
I believe (hope) we have the staff that can evaluate talent to get what's needed. Cignetti & Co. went out and brought Mendoza in. Like I said, no more excuses.

I think our ceiling is probably a bit less than "top 3 finish" with Reed, but I think saying "he can't make plays" is unfairly selling him short. He's not a great quarterback, but he's a good quarterback. Miami just proved you can make it pretty far with a merely good quarterback.

IU somewhat proves that coaches don't have excuses. "If RC only had facilities" or "I can't win a Natty at Ole Miss". They are legion. Coaching and player identification/development are relevant.

It wasn't just Reed, it's just everyone wants to give him blame because he threw the INT that would have just TIED the game, but we had a defensive problem all year of stopping the run. We were giving up gash plays all year long, and this has nothing to do with Reed. As good as this team was, we did have our flaws. Hopefully, 11-2 is the new normal, and is disappointing enough to say that we can do better.

We were 18th in total defense and gave up 10 and 27 points in our 2 losses. Reed had 2 interceptions in each of those games. I'm going with poor QB play as the most important factor.

Indiana's win is going to make the coaching carousel insane for years to come for this exact reason. Cignetti used the portal in a unique way that allowed him to get ahead of the competition. More coaches are catching on and using the portal to increase the age of their roster. No telling if Cignetti can even repeat what he's done as more and more coaches copycat him.

I expect NIL will also have a lot to do with roster's aging and players will find in a lot of cases they can get in college what they might have gotten depending on where they are drafted. The cream will still go to the draft but a lot of quality players will stay.
