Why does Steve need special assistants. I believe he's already tried one Gary Patterson
Some of these schools have more coaches than players who see the field in season. Texas probably sill has DKR on the payroll.
DKR died in 2012, but he was a special assistant to the tu President up until then. For a long time every ex-coach was on the tu payroll. Fred Akers was color commentator on the radio broadcast and David McWilliams an assistant AD. Mackovic broke that string (he wasn't well liked) and Brown quickly took another HC job. After that, there was a more hostile attitude to ex-coaches.
Patterson was very helpful to tu as an analyst. Saban showed the value of having ex-coaches as analysts. Having an outsider say "here is how I would try to stop your offense" or "this is how I would attack your defense" is invaluable feedback.
Texas beat Kentucky in overtime in 2025. But everyone at Texas was impressed with how Stoops kept the game close with less talented athletes. Way outgained Texas in yards and first downs.
