According to him, it is customary for Nigerian Americans to be given a Nigerian name and an American name.

Nnamadi was his given name and means "my father's son" or "my father's legacy." He decided to make the switch to honor his parents and his heritage.

I assume he went by Justin before because it was easier for Americans to say growing up.

I have several friends and acquaintances in Zambia. I've noticed that they have and use more family names somewhat interchangeably. While it seems confusing to Americans, it seems to be more common in the cultures of sub-Saharan Africa.
