Sad deal for him. Gamifying sports betting such that it is more like mobile device gaming sure seems like it is gonna wreck many many young men.

Remember back in the 80s-90s of the SWC when some teams would get investigated and fined/restricted/punished for wrongdoings while others who were likely doing the same thing were not investigated?

This sounds familiar.

First - it's the NCAA and I never trust them to do anything properly.

But:

According to sources, Sorsby bet on Indiana football while redshirting for the Hoosiers as a true freshman in 2022, a season in which he played in a single game as a reserve. The bets in 2022, according to sources, were on Indiana to win and none came in a game in which Sorsby appeared.

If this true he should never play another down.

The betting history spans back years.

By the letter of the law he should be deemed permanently ineligible, maybe an argument could be made for 50% loss of one year of eligibility if we're being generous, but anything less than that would be unacceptable in this case.

I also agree with other posters noting that while the kid has to take responsibility for his own actions, the gambling industry has tried their best to redefine sports betting as an innocent game and largely succeeded. When I was young the industry outside of Vegas were all about bookies and underground dens of criminals and you had stories about dudes getting killed for racking up gambling debts. Now every commercial during a game is trying to encourage me to take on prop bets.

It's a real shame that this kid is likely about to find out what real world consequences are, but it's also a shame that the 'adults' in our society have created the conditions on which such sin is advertised directly to kids like Sorsby.
