This reminds me of how we got Horton, and shows this staff's recruiting strategy. Pick a target player (cam Coleman / john Merideth), recruit them heavily, if they start leaning another direction start recruiting a guy you've kept on the "back-burner" just in case (Horton / Dobson). I know we're still pursuing Merideth, but this is now two instances of this staff being able to quickly pivot to a "backup" plan recruiting wise, which I am a HUGE fan of. (also don't get me wrong, Horton and Dobson are awesome players in their own rights, but it is a fact that Coleman and Merideth were recruited harder at the beginning of their respective processes)
highly doubt this kid is "backup" plan. He is a top 10 player and there are 2 cbs on the field every defensive play
There's more to it than that, though. It's still boils down to money.
Just like, if not for money, we'd 100% take both Coleman and Horton. We had room. When Coleman was gone, Horton got more and secured him. With coleman, Horton not only gets less, but he sees us get WR1. Same with Merideth/Dobson. if he comes, Dobson gets, less, and sees CB1. Less chance of getting him. Pivoting of funds makes sense and it's why every time we see a guy we may lead for or get trend elsewhere, it's not a coincidence we have someone about as good where those funds are allocated to secure.
