He is stuck between doing what is right (recusing himself, IMO), doing what likely is best for his career in Lubbock (allowing Sorsby to play and then over-justifying it thoroughly), and possibly having to look at this in black/white and seeing that he did bet on IU while at IU & side with NCAA.

The "safe bet" for the judge is to recuse himself. He'll take collateral damage with either decision he makes if he has to decide. If he sides with Sorsby, the decision should/could be contested and appealed ... perception would be from some that he doesn't have a strong moral compass. If he sides with NCAA (on surface seems the correct decision), then he runs serious risk of alienating many Lubbock voters ... if it comes to this he should point out how impartial he is and looks at facts and sell his morality for all its worth.

Meanwhile the county jail is full of people who haven't been convicted of anything, continually get their cases reset...but damn the constitution, this judge has IMPORTANT stuff to do. Anyway, he served his time doing nothing at the county level. TTU QB is a federal matter!

The NCAA is a feckless and archaic body that is on its way out. If Sorsby wins this (I 100% think he will) the can of worms this will open will just further ruin CFB as we've known it.

not a stupid question at all.

the case is in state district court because that is where Sorsby filed it. ncaa does business in Texas, so is subject to personal jurisdiction of our state courts.

sorsby could have filed in federal court, but chose a friendlier forum for his case

Humans are mostly corrupt and it's always rigged. Humanity just has access to the most information in history so that we kind of know the corruption is happening as it happens instead of figuring it out after the fact.

Eventually, all these guys dropping dollars into a volcano each year for these kids will get old. There will be reform to make this more sustainable. There needs to be contracts and some sort of sacrifice these kids need to make in their contracts.

The high dollar NIL should include University billing the kids for tuition, fees, room and board, etc and make this type of thing standard for anybody receiving big NIL money.

The guys who aren't receiving big NIL money remain scholar-shipped.

Debate those details but have a foundation and some governance.

Something to that effect.

I'd like to know what this really gambled on, was it prize picks type bets or hardcore gambling? Was it thousands of bets for $5 or bets in the thousands of dollars per bet?

It was 10,000 online bets. And the rules don't allow for either of your scenarios if you're betting on your own team which he was shown to be doing so the difference isn't really relevant
