Brilliant move by Zizou. When your entire organizational philosophy is "give Cristiano the ball", you definitely don't want to be the manager sitting in the hot seat when he leaves. Had he been RM's manager this year the team would have still sucked and his status as a manager would have been tarnished. Heck, he might have even gotten fired just like Solari. Instead, he retakes his old job but this time without any added pressure or lost prestige.
