I thought he did a great job of managing a very contentious match...apparently the Columbians and Maradona felt he was horribly biased.

How did he rate to you? I thought he carded those that needed it, did a great job of holding cards in his pocket for dissent when he damn well could've carded the entire Columbians team, and called a correct penalty when Kane was wrestled down in the box.

Columbians sound like a bunch of whiny losers to me.

Good, should have been harsher on Columbia. FIFA should fine the crap out of them for thier disgusting behavior and these stupid remarks they are making.

He did fine. 6 referees were sent home this morning, including the Colombian referee (Roldan) because they had bad games or didn't make the cut for the remaining 8 games. In Roldan's case he had a very bad game. It was England v Tunisia and he didn't call the multiple takedowns in the penalty area. You know, the one that Geiger did call yesterday.

Interestingly enough one who got sent home was Felix Brych from Germany. One of the best in the world who would have been a very good candidate for a semi or the final with Germany out. He screwed up a VAR protocol and got cut. Both Geiger and Jair Marrufo made the cut and are staying. So I think it's safe to say the FIFA and the referee committee don't agree with Mr. Maradona.

The QF assignments just came out. Jair just got the 4O slot for Belgium v Brazil. Good for him.

Yeah he could have easily red carded 3 Colombians for their behaviour

Colombia didn't attack until the 10 minutes and did nothing in 30 minutes of extra time

Look in the mirror for losing to England

He did exactly what he had to do to keep that match from turning into a riot

Yellow cards can be a weapon for an official, and there are times where they have to be used as such

Maradona should feel fortunate, that Columbia didn't end the game with 8 Players. They were playing like thugs.

Also, can a game going to PKs be any less fixed? The finish is completely based on the merit of the players. All 5 of England's we're on goal; 4 of Columbia's were on goal. Surprise, England won with one PK blocked.

A couple of news items coming from this thread: A university soccer team somehow made it to the World Cup. And beloved author, Beverly Cleary, is a racist.

Geiger did fine. Colombia should have finished with five players.

As a referee myself, I have reffed high school games where a team acts like the Colombians did, and it really makes the game hard to manage. I always try and not be a factor in the game, to let the play decide, but when players act like the Colombians it makes it hard.

I thought he did well to try and not be bigger than the game, and showed great restraint to not red card any of the Colombians. The PK was the right decision, often doesn't get called but should.

His calls were consistent and correct for the most part. If anything, I wish he would have shown more yellows for dissent, so the Colombian antics would have slowed down, especially after the pk call.

I don't know how anyone can watch that replay of Sanchez fouling Kane and say with a straight face that it wasn't a foul. He literally rode Kane like a bronco all the way to the ground.

And hadn't Geiger just warned Colombia about those kinds of takedowns on the last corner?

So Mookie's high school friend is Colombian. He posted a video of when there was a throw in and Geiger blew the whistle and none of the English players moved. The Colombian shot and put it in the net and Geiger waved it off.

The video posted with the guy speaking in Spanish had the volume off where you couldn't hear the whistle.

See if this works:

There was a U12 moment on a late throw in with a second ball on the pitch. Young was getting ready to throw in and he had to wait for it to get kicked off. When he threw it on Maguire was the recipient but he wasn't ready. He wasn't even looking at Young. The ball rolled past him to a Colombian who wasn't sure what to do so he turned and took a couple of easy dribbles toward goal. No one else reacted so he too another and shot it past Pickford who also didn't react. You couldn't hear any whistles on the broadcast but the player reactions gave the impression he had taken the ball out of play and wasn't ready for Young to restart. So he brought it back and did a rethrow. No one really yipped. If (big if) he blew it live the first time and Young knew that's a live ball and he bailed England out.

I heard the whistle on the broadcast, which is why the English did what they did.

Don't forget the whining earlier about Geiger allegedly asking Pepe for a jersey.

As if anyone would want his bullet riddled kit anyway.

You can tell from that video the ball wasn't back in play. The second ball bounced off the screen board and was about to go back on the pitch. AR1 was retrieving it as Young was throwing the first ball in. Geiger had a dead ball, AR1 knew it too.

England did not play great and we've been lucky so far. In fact I think that Sweden might have our number on Saturday, but this petition is silly.

That's a hard game to call. England have a prettier game but Sweden, in my opinion, have been tested more and won their group. Their game is very English oddly enough. Big target striker, organized defense, and lots of direct play.

Should be a good one!

England played well enough to win and they did. Colombia hacked the hell out Kane, played like thugs. If England played offensive soccer instead of packing it in Colombia would not feel as entiitled as they are acting. It took England a while to get back on offense, once they did they missed a chance in OT that should have been a goal. I don't recall Colombian blowing any chances like that. They had a lot of dangerous crosses etc but that's about it.

England dominated the game during the time when Colombia was more interested in gamesmanship than soccer. From 70' through about 110' (when they decided to actually play soccer) I thought Colombia out played them. Ironically enough if they had not played like petulant 13 year old children for much of the match they might have won. Sweden will have noticed that. Play clean, play smart and you have a chance.

Although, England could have easily been up 2-0 or 3-0 in the first 15-20 minutes of the game.
