Nice video. I was worried it would slow down the game but honestly I haven't felt much of an interruption with VAR.

Thank you for this very interesting post! Blue Star for you OP.

I have little to add to the discussion other than the USA should have had a penalty kick in the quarter final match against Germany in the 2002 World Cup. That was a GOAL by Donovan if it wasn't blocked by the arm of that Germ defender. We would have played Korea in the Semis (a team we tied in the group stage) if we'd have beaten Germany. If we beat Korea, we would have played in the final, one win from World Cup Champion Immortality...

Dangerous game to play...

If VAR existed in 2002, John O'Brien's "Hand of John" gets called and, more than likely, Mexico converts the penalty. At 1-1 who knows what happens in that game. Torsten may never have had a chance to happen.

I would argue that goal line technology would have made a more profound difference than VAR. Yes, VAR catches the Hand of God, but it would not have changed anything in that clip with the GK knocking out the French player. He had already gotten the shot off and it wasn't going anywhere but out of play when the collision occurred. While a massive collision that is traditionally considered trifling if the fouled player cannot make any further play on the ball.

Schumacher's foul on Battiston in the 1982 semi final between W. Germany and France. If it's called the French would have been awarded a penalty and Schumacher would have been sent off. The French would probably then gone on to the final.

With VAR they would have called the penalty in the box and the keeper would have been given a card

No. The reason that foul isn't given is a PK would represent a second bite at the apple. The player got off a shot, it wasn't going in and the ball is going out of play. If you award a PK you give them a second chance to score the goal (aka second bite). It to mention that GKs are traditionally allowed to commit murder without any call. See Neuer, Manuel.

You commit a foul like that today and it would be a PK no matter if it were a second bite our not
