Perisic's Goal: Was it Dangerous Play?

I have a friend of mine who is arguing that this should NOT have been a goal, due to High Kick and Dangerous Play (he also HATES this referee Cuneyt Cakir from Turkey). He contends that the English Defender (Kyle Walker) was in front of Perisic and therefor had rights to the incoming ball, and that Perisic came from behind with a high boot and is guilty of the dangerous play.

I contend that:
  • Walker was the one playing dangerously per FIFA rules by lowering his head to meet the ball
  • Perisic never touched (or only slightly brushed) Walker during the kick action and follow through (watch Walker after the play, he just lands and acts disappointed); therefore it still doesn't meet the dangerous play requirement

To me, it just looks like a great effort play.

What do you think? Was it a miss by the referee? Or a great acrobatic play by Perisic?

This. It's not called often, but it could have been called earlier in the game as well. Lower your head, and it's on you.

Also, that wasn't close to him lowering his head. They guys foot was prob close to 6 feet up in the air.

It was a hell of athletic play, why they would not call it, even though it was a dangerous play that could easily have been called.

If you have to leave your feet to head a ball while diving, you've put yourself in danger, not vice versa. You never see it called when strikers dive to head the ball amongst feet. Good no call

No foul and I haven't found anyone who was trying to argue that the VAR review, which takes place after every goal, was wrong in its conclusion. And It's not like the defender was trying to duck out of the way or adjusted what he was doing during the play.

How short do think they are? It's not a bunch of Messi's running around. Their defense ranges from 5'9 to 6'3.

No. Not in professional soccer. Not in semi pro. Not in college. Not in HS. Not in club ball. In U12 Rec ball I make that call because they are 11 years old and don't know what they are doing. . In recreational adult league I make that call because 40 year olds don't have control over their bodies anymore but that's it. There is absolutely nothing in the LOTG about feet up in the air. The standard for Playing in a Dangerous Manner is "did the offended player shy away from the play because they felt unsafe?" I promise you Kyle Walker didn't shy away from that play. If contact is made it's still not PIADM. It's a foul.

"Close to 6 feet". How about 5.5 how about 5? It was a high boot period. I don't think it should have been called, but to say it couldn't and it wasnt a dangerous play is BS. He was already there to head the ball before the guy snatched it away, he didn't know it was coming.

Well, your absolute stance is wrong you got that part right. If you care to grow as a ref go read the various debates on the matter. There are plenty more that will also help you understand why you are wrong and also plenty that agree with you. The same ref sent a guy off for a high boot in diff game. If it's never called then why did that ref send a guy off for what you say isn't called.

Oh for ****s sake. Cakir sent off Nani for planting his studs in the chest of a RM player in UCL. That's not playing in a dangerous manner. That's serious foul play. Its not even close to the same thing. He was right then and he was right today.

I feel for you, I wanted England to win too, they squandered opportunities early to kill the game then pretty much self destructed once Croatia put the pressure on. I too think there were some questionable non calls, but Croatia was the more complete team. This arguement is just not tenable.

Bet you wanted the PK when Kane tried to head a crOSS and it was cleared

That was closer than this one and both times the English players tried to head waist high balls in traffic

England lost the game when Kane missed from 2 feet

WEll, the head ref, the two A/Rs, and the VAR said it was okay.

So far, that's 4-1 on FIFA refs agreeing that's it's a no call.

Hell I said I would "not have called it, but that doesn't mean it wasn't something that could have been called. That call is subjective just like the catch rule nfl blows all the time. NCAA blows replay all the time.

It's waist high guys boot didn't cross his waist till the follow thru

Yes it was close and could have been called but it was reviewed and ruled a proper goal

Close call and when the emasculated ref gets it right he deserves some praise or else
he has to give a card to feel manly
