Winter World Cup in 2022 is soooo stupid

If I was Premier League or any other significant league, I'd just keep my schedule unchanged in protest of this stupidity. Make teams, players, and fans pick sides. That MIGHT give FIFA Justice for awarding the world cup to a country in the desert with no soccer tradition and where it's illegal to be gay or drink in public.

Premier league?

Every league on the planet other than MLS, Ireland, Sweden and I think Norway is affected.

Russian League may not be affected.

In seriousness, I really do hope the 2022 Cup is a unmitigated failure. Low ratings, player and federation complaints, etc. Let FIFA take a huge L for selling out the event the way they did.

Yeah, I know, hence the "or any other significant league" part of the sentence.

My point was that just one of the biggest leagues needs to step up and be a leader in declaring they will not adjust their domestic schedule to accommodate the next world cup. The onus is not on them to provide any solutions either. Just say you're not budging and give FIFA the middle finger.

Oh they'll sell beer.

If you haven't watched the Last Week Tonight episodes on FIFA from a couple years back, they are excellent.

Qatar clearly bribed their win to hosting that tournament. Why FIFA haven't rescinded it yet is beyond me.

Well the thousands of people that have died building stadiums will matter even less if they take it away now.

I just wonder how the logistics of hosting such a large even is going to work in a place the size of the metroplex...

FIFA give back a bribe? Clearly you haven't been paying attention.

The original proposal was to have the World Cup in the summer.
Think about how much bribery they had to give to get approval to have the World Cup in the Qatar summer?

Only stadiums? They're building "cities" to hold the stadiums to make sure the usual multi-city format can be followed.

On another note, what's the over/under on how many goals the hosts will give up in group play? 15? 20?

Was that when they were proposing the pie-in-the-sky outdoor air conditioning like it could actually ever happen?

The whole thing is a joke and I hope that all of the high end leagues/clubs tell FIFA to pound sand and refuse to release their players. At an absolute minimum, I hope they demand such a large chunk of flesh that the FIFA/Qatari bribery circle jerk ends up costing both entities much more than it would have cost to be legitimate.

Qatar already reduced the number of stadiums from 12 to 8. I read somewhere that most of the stadiums are "temporary" and will be disassembled after the WC except the main stadium which will go from ~80,000 to ~40,000 after the WC. Some are made out of freaking shipping containers so it's easier to take apart. The fact that Morocco was even considered as a site is just insane. When I think of soccer, the first thing that comes to mind is desert. Sadly, we know that FIFA is concerned with only one thing....and it's not the sport it governs $$.

Don't worry. Now Morocco is considering a joint bid with Tunisia and Algeria for 2030.

Morocco isn't desert. It's mostly the same climate as Spain. It'd be like saying areas like Los Angeles and San Diego shouldn't host a World Cup because they are in the desert

Probably would be a stronger bid than for 2026 since they won't have to build so many stadiums but I don't think they have much chance of hosting.

I think the UruguayArgentinaParaguay group is most likely to win that one. 100 year anniversary since the first world cup held in Uruguay seems like something they won't be able to resist. I can't see them passing that up if they can pull off a competitive bid.

Even if that doesn't work out, it looks like the UK is going to bid so they would have to compete against that.

Well a joint big for Uruguay/Argentina would be based out of Buenos Aires, which would be a cool city for the finals. They still might need Chile to get on board to for a few host sites.

There were two world cups hosted between Germany and Russia (South Africa & Brazil). That is the largest gap between world cups hosted in Europe in history. There would be two world cups (Qatar and USA/Canada/Mexico) between Russia and this bid in 2030.

The new FIFA rule which states a federation cannot bid to host in the two world cups following one of their members hosting was designed precisely because it wasn't that tough of a sell for Europe to host every other world cup. I would expect Europe to host just about every 3rd world cup.

Looking at the board, I think 2030 comes down to Argentina / Uruguay and the UK bid. Hopefully the northern Africa bid will continue to be ignored.

It looks like Indonesia/Thailand will make a bid for 2034 but u bet it comes down to the loser from 2030 and China.
