Before I forget, I wanted to mention Abby Cooper today because she played really well with the minutes she was given. Her possessions, turns, and finishing (on a well taken goal) were top notch. Although Smith is a solid forward, I'd like to see her get some more minutes alongside Watt or Asdis, because she has such nice touch on the ball.
The first half was a bit sketchy and we didn't play well in the midfield with a lot of errant passes and miscommunication. It was really hot out there but we didn't have the type of effort we've seen in the past going after 50/50 balls. We did have the great pass from Hill and finish from Cooper, but we weren't as dangerous as we usually are until the 2nd half. But during a good 15 minute stretch in the 2nd half, we really controlled the tempo and controlled the ball with more precision, and set up several good scoring chances that we finished. See McCain's rocket shot from distance today. One of the reasons we are scoring more goals this season is that our shots from distance are lower and on target instead of way over top of the goal. It results in an average of about 1 more goal per game, which obviously is a big deal. McCain, Watt, Asdis, and Lopez can all shoot accurately from about 20-30 yards out, which forces the defense to come out and defend and opens up space behind them to operate.
We have a good team this year because we still seem to find a way to score 2-3 goals even when we're not at our best, and that is scary for SEC opponents going forward. This isn't our most talented team as some have offered, but it is one of our best "teams" that play hard for each other and seem to have a knack of finding that little space or give-and-go (which we're doing a lot more of this season with good results) that makes the difference in close games. I'm interested to see how we perform on the road now in a relatively tough place to play at Arkansas. If we play our game we should win regardless of what the Razorbacks do.
