So they are adding a level 3 league (think AA baseball) calling it USLeague 1 and are rebranding the PDL(Single A) as USLeague 2, and the existing (AAA) Level 2 League just below MLS will be called USL Championship.

Pro/Rel?

Seems like we're putting a pro/rel structure in place.

I still don't know how (or why) MLS would ever go for it, but this is the first step.

Pro Rel will never happen here.

Have they thought about something like this: if a USL team ever wins the US Open Cup, they could promote them to MLS; combined with pro/rel between PDL and USL and whatever this new 3rd tier is... that can be part of the MLS expansion plan (if it ever happens), spur some investment in the lower USL and PDL levels, etc. without threatening MLS owners with possible relegation.

That's an interesting concept... pro without the rel

Seems like a functionally possible compromise, so I don't hate it
