Since were already completely off the rails here, I just wanted to interject that this phenomenon was what I was worried about when USSF started using the teams to promote any sort of agenda. (The most recent example is the rainbow pride numbers on the jerseys.)
No matter how worthy the message you're trying to push, the reaction to that message almost always steals the spotlight and results in pretty divisive actions by fans, players, etc. Plus, just because you agree with *this message* doesn't ensure you'll be okay with whatever the next message might be.
I'm actually fine with players not all toeing the company line, but it didn't make any sense to me at the time that the Fed would choose a company line that they knew would result in some fractions.
