Some pretty exciting play for the last 10+ minutes. Ohio St. is playing well. I sure would like another goal for us.

5 minutes to play.

A&M a bit lucky to win this one. Took a really special effort from Jimena to take the lead and got several favorable bounces in our box to hang on to the shutout.

Right? So many open seats. Used to be standing room only.

Week 3 of the season seems late for the Fish Camp game. Is this the normal timeframe?

Isn't it also usually the week of a home football game?

We stole that one.

Ref letting both sides get away with lots of contact, we don't often play well in those types of games. We weren't even trying to win a lot of 50/50 balls though and that's the whole key to our strategy. Got out hustled by a team from the north on a hot night, can't let that happen.

From what I saw on the SEC network, it looked like a LOT of attendees were not even watching the game, standing and facing away from the field.... what's with that?!?

I don't know what to think of this team anymore. The team that played tonight was outplayed 70 of the 90 minutes on the field... against a winless Ohio State team that had a season high in shots and corners.

This was a win but this was not good. The weakness in ball control compared to Ohio State was stunning. Too often when a forward went towards Ohio State goal there was no one there to support her. The other players were dragging behind.

I thought at the start of the second half we would come out with a lot better determination, a lot better effort, but we didn't.

There was no top 15 team on the pitch tonight.

Live out of state and this was the 1st game I've seen this year. So, not sure if this has been representative of the year so far. Really fortunate not to be down at the half 1-0.

My thoughts: watt and Lopez are the real deal. Lopez' free kick was great. Didn't understand why Coach took them both out at the same time in the 1st half. At least in this game he took out the only 2 real scoring threats.

Smith (22) has raw potential but thought there were too many missed opportunities. Question...is she uncomfortable shooting off her right foot? On the play that ultimately got the goal-scoring free kick she clearly wanted the ball on her left.

Midfield played really poorly all game IMO, though was better after a lot of the subs. Really lost shape many times. Also, too many uncontested giveaways. Piper was really slow; was she playing hurt?

Defense was good at times but the Aggie left back didn't have a very good game. Those 2 through balls for OSU absolutely could have been goals. Thought the Aggie keeper played really well - good saves in both halves. Real threats from OSU in the 2nd half.

Again, 1st time to see the team this year, so perhaps this game was an aberration? Either way, lots of opportunities for improvement and ultimately a win is a win (on a hot night).

The game ended not a moment too soon, and tosu probably should have had one last free kick from close range before the ref let the clock run out.

It's early, but IMO the team is under-performing relative to the expectations of many.

First, I've noticed a steady decline in attendance at Fish Camp games over the last several years. I'm not sure why but this is an off weekend for football and the game came later than usual from the first day of school. It was a disappointing showing from the freshmen for sure. To the game, Ohio State was dealt a harsh result tonight after outplaying A&M for long stretches of the match. Both teams had chances in front of goal, but A&M finished one terrific free kick by Lopez and that was the difference. A&M dominated the first 10 minutes and had 2-point blank chances in front of goal to take control of the match but couldn't convert. The Buckeyes slowly took away possession and frustrated A&M's lumbering midfield, which just couldn't keep up or keep the ball when they had it. We had several players have off nights, including Watt, who looked plain disinterested in the match. At times there was a lot of ball watching and a lack of hustle which was surprising. I actually think it was A&M that was wilting in the humid warm air and OSU that seemed to get stronger as the match unfolded. Stamina wasn't there tonight.

  • Lopez continues to be the heart of this team and without her A&M loses this match. She is a step faster than last year and it results in a lot of end line runs and great crosses into the box. We just need someone to finish those scoring chances in front of goal.
  • Hutton made some key saves late in the match with her quick reflexes as the defense was really struggling to keep OSU at bay in the last 20 minutes. However, she continues to make poor decisions in passing out of the back, putting pressure on a back line that doesn't need any more difficult decision making as the frequent turnovers prove. She doesn't have a strong long kick, but it's still a better option than rolling it out to her defense.
  • Katie Smith showed some flashes tonight with a few good long runs at the defense and she brought good energy into the game.
  • Rheagan Smith is close to becoming a really good player. Once she can consistently break away from opponents after possessing the ball, she will get a lot more looks at goal.
  • The outside backs were consistently beaten by OSU forwards on the flanks. OSU had much more team speed than I expected, and they seemed to have an actual strategy when they moved forward in attack. I can't say the same for A&M's attack tonight.
  • The foul on Smith that resulted in the free kick goal didn't look like a foul to me. Smith seemed to run into the OSU defender and fell down. Maybe a lucky break for A&M.
  • The midfield was losing its shape on the right side of the field way too much and left acres of space for OSU to operate in. I haven't seen that in a long time at A&M. We are in desperate need of some athletic and fast midfielders in recruiting. Some of it may have been the result of sagging back to help an overwhelmed back three at times, which is why the coaches should have adjusted with a 4-back set so the midfield could actually play their positions.
  • A&M must finish off their chances in front of goal. I counted at least 4 point blank shots within 10 yards of goal that should have been finished. That would have completely changed the complexion of this game and we're not scrambling in the last 15 minutes of the match.
The coaches have a lot of work to do with this team because they are not living up to expectations. That was a very disappointing performance against a winless team, which outplayed them in the biggest atmosphere of the season. I just don't understand the lack of focus and timid play at times. Someone needs to be a leader and start elevating the team around them. It's still early but I'm not sure if this team is better than a .500 team in SEC play, which would be unacceptable in my opinion. We have enough talent to win the league, albeit a bit shorthanded in the midfield, so it's up to the coaches to motivate this group and put the best combination on the field to control matches. We are winning games, but make no mistake, the competition is about to get much tougher at BYU and in conference, so play like tonight will result in losses.

It looked half empty to me, though it took me a while to realize that the cameras were generally on the opposite side of the field from what I expected ... the general admission seats on the side opposite the players looked quite spotty, certainly not the 5000 that the TV announcers said... end zones looked fuller...

Thanks, Hidden Ag. You obviously know a lot more about soccer than do I. But even I could see some of those things. From what I have seen, a mid-level team in the SEC.

Also disappointed in the crowd. The announcers saying we need a goal to get crowd into it. Usually they are already into it.

Laughed at announcers saying all over Texas people were trying to get a ticket for this game. Then the cameras showed half empty stands. Probably need to schedule this before on a FB weekend.

Taylor, Jimena and Karlina are the key players for us. Taylor went all 90 minutes last night, and there might not be a square yard of the field that she didn't set foot in. Jimena ran with a OSU player in our defensive penalty area to knock the ball away early in the second half to save a goal. I think Shantel answered some questions about her goal keeping that some people had.

No matter how you try to analyze it, overall it was just a poor performance at home & against a weaker opponent.

Compared to Ohio State, we had less effort, less enthusiasm, and less ball control. We were sluggish, slow, and outplayed to some extent.

What questions did Shantel answer? I haven't posed any questions, but last night I do not remember any great saves, and two of her saves were misplayed balls (corner off Karlinas shoulder and the one that hit the crossbar after going through her hands).
For the most part we played like garbage. This team needs a Miki or Shea. Addie needs to fill that role, but sometimes it seems she is just content to be out there...
Katie smith and Taylor Ziemer seemed to play well.
A continuing tradition is our lack of movement without the ball, which hurts our ability to pass the ball and effectively move it forward. Our over reliance on passing the ball back to the defence and keeper to maintain possession has not proved beneficial at all, we turn it over more times than not which results in better position for the other team.
We have a lot of potential with most of our players from last year back and a few good additions. The coaches really need to step up and the players need to execute.

Years ago we used to get crowds pretty close to this one on regular friday nights. The change of conferences, overall decline in play, and general decline in sports attendance has been hurting us. This was a pitiful showing by the students for a fish camp game.

I'm really curious on what the other keepers lack, that causes Hutton to be the starter. I don't think she is a bad GK. She has shown some bright spots with the one-handed save that deflected around the post and has quick reflexes (proven with a couple of those deflections). But she has not been tested on crosses or breakaways. I did play GK early in my career, so I know the basics and some of her technique makes me cringe at times. This will come with time training with Coach G with his experience. I'll have faith in that.

Also, I think I'm the only one or a part of a small majority that is thankful the Aggies are finally passing the ball around the back. The quick boot up the field when under minimal pressure always bothered me from the past teams. I thought this always separated the top teams in NCAA, those who could utilize their goalkeeper as an extra field player and hold possession are usually the teams that go deep. Are the Aggies talented enough with their current players? Maybe.

I'd guess that what has set Hutton apart is pure shot-stopping ability. She's shown ability already to make some tough saves. She kept us in the Santa Clara game.

And I agree--G can turn her into a terrific GK, just like he did with Jordan Day, who struggled initially. (Remember giving up 5 to Duke?).

Keep in mind that ALL our keepers are young, so none of them are probably complete players right now. Hutton does a good job preventing goals, probably better than the others at this point. She lacks in some decision making and leg strength but that'll get better.

I too would rather play the ball out of the back instead of depending on winning 50/50 balls at midfield (which some of our midfielders seem uninterested in doing), she just needs to make better decisions when doing so sometimes.

Use the WWC as an example, Naeher played a bad ball out of the back to Sauerbrunn which resulted in a goal against. It happens at all levels of play, but learning from a mistake is key.

Jumping for starters
Ability to punt a ball
Ability to get kick a non moving ball
Ability to attack a corner kick
Just a few

So some of you seem to think the keeper position is one of our biggest issues. Really? I think she deserved player of the match against Ohio State. Yes she is a freshman and makes freshman mistakes on the field. But so far she hasn't cost us a goal, Looking at the scoreline, I would think you'd save the majority of complaints for players that are usually much further up the field compared to our keeper.

Yeah, keeper isn't our problem, but she hasn't been challenged because we haven't played anyone decent yet.
Our biggest problems are effort and leadership. If we played harder our passes would be more crisp and we'd have fewer bad giveaways. That should help our struggling offense.

Although it's definitely not the same, she gets challenges in practice.
Apparently she has demonstrated do the coaches that she's the best of the bunch so far.
