As the calendar nears the end of February and all EPL teams have 11 matches remaining, it is time, again, for the annual relegation watch, as the bottom half of the EPL begins to focus more on survival and less on a top 4 spot.

This year looks to be particularly exciting as we have 5-6 teams all very near one another in the standings, and all these teams (save Norwich) come into the relegation watch with more points than is the norm at this time of year. Other than Liverpool, there is generally more parady in the EPL this season then we have seen in a while, and hopefully that will mean an exciting relegation battle. We are due, as last year was the least exciting relegation conclusion to a season we have had since I have been doing this thread.

Current Standings:

Club Games Played Points
15. Brighton & Hove Albion 27 28
16. Bournemouth 27 26
17. Aston Villa 27 25
18. West Ham 27 24
19. Watford 27 24
20. Norwich 26 18

Brighton & Hove Albion- Albion have been relegation battle regulars since their EPL arrival in 2017. In 2018 the Gulls finished 15th and last year they were the last club to survive relegation, finishing 17th. Here they are again, on the edge of the relegation battle, hoping to survive for another year in the EPL. The team has not won an EPL match in 2020, going 0(W) 5(T) 2(L) since the New Year. Draws are nice, but the club needs to put together some wins to get out of this year's relegation talk. The schedule is not particularly kind for Albion, as they only have one match remaining with a fellow relegation contender (April 11 at Norwich). The club does play many of the top flight teams (Leicester, Man. United, Liverpool, Man. City) so we might expect Albion to be a part of our Relegation battle until the end.

Bournemouth-The Cherries are playing in their 5th consecutive season in the EPL, and for the most part they have been able to avoid serious relegation scares in the last few years. Eddie Howe's club have had a bit tougher time this season, however, and currently sit just 2 points above the relegation line. Bournemouth have struggled in 2020, going 2 (W) 0(T) 5 (L) in 2020, claiming just 6 points. The Cherries will have to fight for points here on out, as their remaining schedule includes matches with Chelsea, Liverpool, Man. United, Tottenham, Leicester and Man. City. Eddie Howe will need to work his magic once again to save Bournemouth from the despair of relegation.

Aston Villa- Before finally suffering relegation at the end of the 2016 season, Aston Villa was a perpetual member of the relegation watch, always narrowly missing relegation. Now that the Villains are back in the EPL it seems they have found themselves back in their normal placeright on the relegation bubble. Villa have recorded a 2 (W) 4 (L) 1 (T) record for 7 points in 7 matches since the new year, and if they keep up a pace of a point per game they should avoid relegation. The schedule has some difficult upcoming matches (Leicester, Chelsea, Man. United, Liverpool) but there are also some winnable games, including a possible tasty match-up with fellow relegation dweller West Ham on the final day of the season.

West Ham United- For the last few seasons West Ham have seemed to find themselves consistently part of the relegation discussion. The Hammers did finish 10th last year under Pellegrini, but a poor start this season cast him his job and led to David Moyes coming back to try and stave off elimination for the Hammers for a second time, as Moyes led them out of the relegation battle in 2018. The starting stretch of the 2020 calendar year has been brutal for the Hammers, as they have gone 1 (W) 5(L) 2(T) for 5 points since the new year, playing Sheffield, Leicester, Man. City and Liverpool (twice) for their five losses. The good news is that the schedule looks much more manageable from here on out, with only two top 6 games remaining (Chelsea and Man. United) and many matches remaining against fellow relegation battlers (Watford, Norwich and last match of year v. Villa). The Hammers currently sit in the relegation zone, but have to feel hopeful that they are right on the cut line after their difficult schedule to start the year.

Watford- Since Watford's promotion to the EPL following the 2015 season, the club has done a good job of really avoiding the relegation battle (except for the 2016-17 season when they finished 17th), but it looks like this year it is going to be a battle for the club to avoid being sent down. The Hornets have started 2020 claiming 8 points from 7 matches (2 (W) 3 (L) 2 (T)) but the schedule has not been particularly difficult, with only one top 6 opponent over the stretch (Man. United). The schedule does get tougher from here on out as they have 4 top 6 matches remaining (Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester, Man City), but they also have matches with other relegation battlers remaining (West Ham and Norwich).

Norwich City- After a three year absence from the EPL, it has been good to have the Canaries back. Norwich has a great fan base and are a team everyone seems to support. Unfortunately, it looks like they may be "one and done" in the EPL, as the Canaries currently sit 20th and are 7 points behind 17th position. The club has a 1 (W) 4(L) 2 (T) record in 2020, and they will need to improve on their point per game performance if they are to make up the ground needed to avoid relegation. The schedule gets easier as they only have two remaining matches against top 6 clubs (season ender against Man. City and Chelsea) and they also have three matches against other relegation dwellers (Brighton, Watford and West Ham) so there is an opportunity for Norwich to claim some points and try and survive, but the club will need to start collecting points soon.

Key Relegation Matches for this upcoming weekend:

Friday
Norwich v. Leicester (Carrow Road, 2pm CST, NBCSN)- The Canaries will begin their fight out of the bottom against Leicester on Friday evening. The clubs tied 1-1 in December at King Power Stadium, so Norwich will be hoping they can claim the full 3 at home. Draws do not really do them much good, so look for Norwich to be set up to try and claim a full 3 points at home. Leicester will of course be looking to continue their great season and hold on to their Champions League position, as the club currently sits 3rd.

Saturday
Brighton and Hove Albion v. Crystal Palace (Amex Stadium, 6:30am CST, NBCSN)- Albion get the early Saturday game this weekend and welcome Palace to the southern coast. The clubs drew 1-1 in December at Selhurst Park, and, with Palace sitting 13th and Brighton in 15th, this match takes on extra importance to the relegation battle. A couple consecutive losses could see Palace joint the relegation discussion, which is something they will be looking to avoid. Brighton's difficult remaining schedule means the Gulls really need to try and claim three points from a home match against another bottom 10 club.

Bournemouth v. Chelsea (Vitality Stadium, 9am, NBCSN)- The Cherries welcome Chelsea to the South Coast on Saturday and will be looking for a repeat of their 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge back in December. That match served as a bit of a turning point for Chelsea, who have looked better since, while Bournemouth have not really capitalized on the victory and now find themselves struggling to stay in the EPL. Should be an entertaining game as both clubs are in search of much needed points, one to avoid relegation and the other to hold onto a Champions League position.

West Ham v. Southampton (London Stadium, 9am, NBC Gold)- The Hammers host Southampton Saturday afternoon and will be looking for a repeat of their 1-0 win at St. Mary's back in December. Southampton currently sit in 12th place, just outside the relegation battle, so they will be keen to claim three points against the Hammers and further extend themselves from relegation talk. West Ham need to win home games like this if they are to avoid relegation this season.

Watford v. Liverpool (Vicarage Road, 11:30am, NBCSN)- Well, this one will be a tough one for Watford as Liverpool come in claiming 79 points from 27 matches, meaning the 1-1 draw to Man United was their only match this season where they have not claimed the full 3 points. The Reds beat Watford 2-0 at Anfield back in December and Watford have not scored a goal in their last four EPL matches against Liverpool. So, good luck Watford.

Aston Villa- The club does not have an EPL Match this weekend as they will be playing Man City in the League Cup Final Sunday afternoon.

Enjoy the weekend!

It's hard to wash off the stench of the Cleveland Browns.

Love this thread and look forward to it every year. Should be an exciting end to the year. The league has been decided for a month but the push for European qualification and relegation will keep it interesting.

Yeah, that is always my biggest challenge, where to put the line of demarkation as far as who is in the relegation battle and who is not.

I generally like to keep it to the three teams above, with Newcastle being 3 points clear of Brighton it was a natural place to draw the line.

Now I will add and subtract teams from the battle as we move along, so teams like Newcastle could be a part of the discussion as we move forward.

This is always such a good thread. Would be cool if we could start a championship promotion thread too, but I just don't have the wherewithal to do it on a meaningful basis like Aston does with this thread.

Agree with this. Wish American sports leagues would develop this culture because, at a minimum, it would seriously inhibit American pro sports teams franchise owners from using their team's regional monopoly in a league to extract ridiculous concessions from local taxing authorities/taxpayers.

EFL Championship promotion battle:

69 points - West Brom Albion
65 - Leeds United
60 - Fulham
59 - Nottingham Forest
56 - Brentford
56 - Preston North End

WBA and Leeds look like they could secure auto-promotion. WBA was last in the EPL in 2017-2018 when they ended an 8 year run in the top division. Leeds hasn't been in the EPL since 03-04 and have even dropped down to league 1 for a spell in the mid-2000s, but they have a great history and great supporters. It will be exciting to see them in the top division once again.

the next four currently in line for the playoff for the third promotion spot have some good history as well. Nottingham Forest was last in the EPL in 1999. Preston North End has never been at the top level in their history and they've been around since 1880's!

Two london clubs, Fulham and Brentford are also in the mix. Fulham had a nice long run in the EPL from 01-2014 and made it back for one year last year before relegating again for this year. Fellow west -london club Brentford has not been at the top level in their long history.

Preston was largely a first division club up until the 60s and won the league the first two seasons it existed. They've finished 2nd another half a dozen times.

I've long wanted to see Forest get promoted As I live in Nottingham Forest.

Agree it would be great to see Leeds and forest back in the top flight. Feels like it's been eons since Leeds tried to make (and failed) big moves to make runs in Europe.

I guess having WBA back would be good since you'd have a big team halfway between Wolverhampton and Birmingham back. WBA v. Villa should be fun to watch.

Some big results from the weekend, all signs are pointing to this being a really good relegation battle:

Norwich 1-0 Leicester Jamal Lewis's superb strike earned Norwich City a 1-0 victory over third-placed Leicester City at Carrow Road. The goal came in the 70th minute when Lewis received a cross from Max Aarons and rifled a shot past Kasper Schmeichel. Leicester had the best of the first-half chances, Iheanacho thought he had put the Foxes in front, but it was overturned for a handball after a VAR review. Norwich's Ondrej Duda was then twice denied by Schmeichel, before Lewis netted his first goal since January 2018. A means Norwich remain 20th, but are now four points from safety with 22 points.

Brighton and Hove Albion 0-1 Crystal Palace. Jordan Ayew's second-half strike earned Crystal Palace a hard-fought 1-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion. There were few first half chances , but after the break Brighton striker Neal Maupay fired straight at Vicente Guaita, who made eight saves in total, before Christian Benteke headed wide for Palace. Ayew broke the deadlock for the Eagles after 70 minutes, latching on to Benteke's clever reverse pass before finishing for his seventh league goal of the season. Wilfried Zaha nearly doubled the lead for Palace in stoppage time but hit the post from a tight angle. Palace's second successive victory takes them up to 12th with 36 points, eight clear of Brighton in 15th.

Bournemouth 2-2 Chelsea. Marcos Alonso scored twice as Chelsea and Bournemouth drew 2-2 in an entertaining match. Philip Billing missed two early chances for the the Cherries before Chelsea broke the deadlock after 33 minutes when Olivier Giroud's effort came back off the crossbar before Alonso fired into the roof of the net. Giroud shot wide early in the second half but Jefferson Lerma headed in a Ryan Fraser corner to equalize on 54 minutes. Bournemouth took the lead three minutes later, Jack Stacey squaring for Joshua King to tap in. But Alonso broke Bournemouth's heart, making it 2-2 with five minutes remaining heading in the tying goal after Pedro's shot had been saved by Aaron Ramsdale. With the tie Bournemouth fall to 18th place with 27 points.

West Ham 3-1 Southampton. West Ham United climbed out of the bottom three with a 3-1 home win over Southampton. Jarrod Bowen put the Hammers in front, scoring his first Premier League goal as he clipped the ball home from Pablo Fornals' fine pass. The Saints equalized when Michael Obafemi's first-time finish from James Ward-Prowse's cross dropped into the net on 31 minutes. But West Ham restored their lead before half-time as Sebastien Haller finished from close range. Antonio then increased the Hammer's lead on 54 minutes, sliding the ball past McCarthy for his second goal of the season. West Ham's first win in eight matches takes them up to 16th on 27 points. Southampton drop to 13th with 34 points.

Watford 3-0 Liverpool. Liverpool's unbeaten season came to an end at Vicarage Road as Watford recorded a tremendous 3-0 win. Watford started strong but couldn't finish their chances in the first half. Their efforts were rewarded, however, with two early second-half goals through Ismaila Sarr, the first coming on 54 minutes and the second six minutes later. On 72 minutes, Sarr found Deeney for Watford's third goal with Alisson stranded off his line. A first win in six matches lifts Watford out of the bottom three on goal difference. Liverpool's 44-match unbeaten run, and their 18-match winning sequence, ends as they stay on 79 points, 22 points above 2nd place Manchester City.

Aston Villa- had the weekend off as they played Sunday in the League Cup Final.

Last weekend we had some of our Relegation battlers pull off impressive victories at home, this weekend we will get to see if they can pull off the same trick on the road, as all the clubs fighting for safety find themselves traveling over the upcoming weekend.

Current Standings:
Club Games Played Points
15. Brighton & Hove Albion 28 28
16. West Ham 28 27
17. Watford 28 27
18. Bournemouth 28 27
19. Aston Villa 27 25
20. Norwich 28 21

Saturday Games
Liverpool v. Bournemouth (Anfield, 6:30am CST, NBCSN)- The Cherries have the unenviable task of travelling to Anfield and facing a Liverpool club that are aiming to bounce back after suffering their first Premier League defeat of the season. Bournemouth are looking for their first win in four matches and a first clean sheet in 12. Liverpool have not lost consecutive Premier League matches since September 2015 under Brendan Rodgers. Liverpool crushed Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium in December by a score of 3-0. Liverpool have won their last 21 Premier League home matches. Victory here would set a record for the most consecutive home wins in English top-flight history. So a draw for the Cherries would be a great result this weekend, and I look for them to come out very defensively against Liverpool.

Arsenal v. West Ham (Emirates Stadium, 9am CST, NBCSN)- The Hammers will travel to North London for a London Derby on Saturday. Arsenal are aiming for a third successive Premier League victory, which would leave them five points outside the top four. West Ham United are looking to secure back-to-back wins for the first time since August after beating Southampton last weekend. Arsenal have won eight of their last nine Premier League home matches against West Ham. They have not lost at home against them since the opening day of the 2015/16 season. David Moyes is aiming for a first win as a manager against Arsenal at the 16th attempt. Arsenal will be looking for a repeat of the December result when the Hammers beat West Ham 3-1 at London Stadium. Much like Bournemouth, the Hammers will likely come out defensively and hope they can claim a point from the weekend.

Crystal Palace v. Watford (Selhurst Park, 9am CST, NBC Gold)- It will be another big London Derby this weekend as Crystal Palace, who are aiming for a third successive win, host Watford. The Eagles, having triumphed 1-0 in their last two fixtures, can climb into the top half with a victory. Watford will hope to build on their impressive 3-0 win over Liverpool and move away from the relegation zone. There has not been a draw in any of the four Premier League meetings between these sides at Selhurst Park. Both teams have won two matches each. Watford are unbeaten in five matches against Crystal Palace in all competitions, winning three and drawing two, since a 2-1 defeat at Selhurst Park in December 2017. The clubs drew 0-0 in December at Vicarage Road, and both sides should be looking to improve upon that result, as they both enter this match with some confidence.

Sheffield United v. Norwich (Brammel Lane, 9am CST, NBC Gold)- These two newly promoted clubs find themselves at opposite ends of the table as they meet at Brammel Lane on Saturday. Hosts Sheffield United, who have won two matches in an unbeaten run of three, would move to within two points of the top four with a win. Norwich City lie four points adrift at the bottom but have renewed hope in their bid for survival after beating third-placed Leicester City last weekend. After a 2-1 win at Carrow Road in December, the Blades are aiming for a first league double over Norwich since 1938/39. This is the 28th season in which they have faced the Canaries since then. The Canaries are looking to win a second consecutive Premier League match for the first time since April 2016. Norwich have scored a grand total of 4 goals (and not more than 1 goal in any game) in 8 PL matches in 2020, so look for them to come out defensively and keep this match low scoring.

Wolverhampton v. Brighton & Hove Albion (Molineaux Stadium, 9am, CNBC)- Much like Sheffield United, the Wanderers are having a great season. Wolverhampton will go level with fourth-placed Chelsea if they can record a third successive Premier League win. Brighton & Hove Albion are seeking a first Premier League victory in 2020 which would help move them away from the relegation zone. Wolves can win a third consecutive Premier League match for the first time since May 2019. In their last two victories they have scored six goals, as many as in their previous seven Premier League fixtures combined. Brighton have never lost to Wolves in the top flight, winning seven and drawing two of their previous nine matches, including a 2-2 draw in December when the clubs met at the Amex. Brighton have a very difficult schedule remaining, so they desperately need to claim points where available.

Monday Game:
Leicester v. Aston Villa (3:00 pm, King Power Stadium, NBCSN). Bothe clubs will go into the Monday night match hungry for points as Leicester City aim for a first Premier League win in four matches after losing 1-0 at Norwich City last time out and Aston Villa are two points from safety in 19th spot and have lost their last three Premier League fixtures. Leicester will be seeking a first Premier League double over Aston Villa since the 1996/97 season after the Foxes claimed a 4-1 win at Villa Park back in December. Villa have a game in hand over the other relegation battlers, but sitting in 19th place means the Villans will need to claim road points when possible to avoid an immediate fall back out of the PL.

Enjoy the weekend!

Watford has a real chance this weekend to pull themselves not out of the discussion but certainly to 15th, three points clear and a better goal difference. Palace is not easy but everyone else is playing teams in the top 10. It is hard to see anyone else picking up three points, though I am sure there will be a draw in there somewhere.

Also, I really want Norwich to survive. I like Carrow Road and I like watching a team that is not red, white, or blue.

I am guessing, at a minimum, they need 14 points. Though it would not surprise me if this season its is 38-40. But lets go with 35

They have 10 left and have the games to get it. They only play four more against top ten teams: SHU, Man City, Chelsea, and Arsenal.

The other six are

Home against Everton, Southampton, Brighton, West Ham, and Burnley.
Away at Watford

They can get 14 out of that. And it would help if they could steal a point this weekend.
