Okay, let's get the time machine cranked up and get the season going once again. Will be interesting to see what effect the three month lay off had on these teams, how playing without fans will change games and how the new sub rules will help or hurt teams.
My inclination is that teams at the top and bottom who really have something to play for will come out interested, and those teams in the middle will come out a bit disinterested, but we shall see.
The good news is that all the games are being spaced out so that they will all be viewable on television. But the format of my update might need to change a bit too, since games will be coming at a rapid rate and played throughout the week. I will try and do a Monday or Tuesday update every week with a recap and look forward.
Current Relegation Standings:
Club Games Played Points
15. Brighton & Hove Albion 29 29
16. West Ham 29 27
17. Watford 29 27
18. Bournemouth 29 27
19. Aston Villa 28 25
20. Norwich 29 21
Key Relegation Matches this week:
Wednesday:
Aston Villa v. Sheffield United (Villa Park, Noon, NBCSN). Villa will kick off the return to matches by hosting Sheffield United in a make up game. The season has gone vastly differently for these two promoted clubs, with Sheffield fighting for a Champions League place and Vill fighting for survival. The away side has won only two of the last 30 Premier League meetings between two promoted clubs (D8 L20), with Aston Villa and Sheffield Utd both winning at Norwich City this season. Following their 2-0 win at Bramall Lane in the reverse fixture in December, Sheffield Utd are looking to secure their first league double over Aston Villa since 1965/66. Sheffield Utd have lost only two of their 13 away matches in the Premier League this season (W4 D7), with those defeats coming against the current top two sides in Liverpool and Manchester City. A win by Villa would pull them out of the bottom 3.
Friday:
Norwich City v. Southampton (Carrow Road, Noon, NBCSN). The Canaries will be looking to start an epic run on Friday, which is what it will likely take for them to avoid relegation, as they sit in 20th position, 6 points behind 17th, with 9 matches remaining. Southampton will be one of those clubs that will be interesting to watch and see their level of interest, as they currently are secure in 14th place, with a 7 point lead over 18th. Southampton beat Norwich 2-0 in the December fixture at St. Mary's, but this match will be seen as a must win by the
Canaries. Norwich has only scored 4 PL goals in 2020, and never more than one in a game, so expect a low scoring, hard fought effort on Friday.
Saturday:
Watford v. Leicester (Vicarage Road, 6:30am, NBCSN). Watford look to get off to a strong start following the break, as they welcome Leicester to Vicarage Road. Leicester currently sit 3rd on 53 points, and will be eager to claim wins to secure their spot in next year's Champions League. Watford did give Liverpool their first defeat of the PL season before the break, so they know how to play against the top clubs. Goal differential is they only thing keeping the Hornets out of the relegation zone. The Foxes won 2-0 in December when the two clubs played at King Power Stadium.
Brighton v. Arsenal (Amex Stadium, 9am, NBCSN). Brighton welcome Arsenal to the south coast for the traditional 3pm Saturday game. This will be Arsenal's second match back, as they are playing a make up game with Man City on Wednesday. Arsenal will be one of the teams that will be interesting to watch and gauge their interest in playing, as they currently sit 9th, although they do have a chance to get up into European football position. Brighton had drawn 3 of their last 4 matches before the break, pulling themselves out of a relegation spot, so they will be hoping to continue their somewhat improved form. Brighton took home a 2-0 win at the Emirates when the clubs met in December, so a win on Saturday would be a great one for the Gulls.
West Ham v. Wolves (London Stadium, 11:30am, NBC). The Hammers continue their seemingly endless battle against relegation on Saturday, hosting a resurgent Wolves squad that is looking for a Champions League spot itself. West Ham had only won 1 of their last 9 matches before the break, so they will hope that their season will get of to a better start this time around. The Wolves pose a tough challenge, one that saw West Ham lose 2-0 at the Molineaux in December.
Bournemouth v. Crystal Palace (Vitality Stadium, 1:45pm, NBC Gold). The Cherries will host mid-table Palace in what should be seen as a must win game for Bournemouth. As detailed before the break, Bournemouth have a difficult schedule for the remainder of the season, so home games against mid-table clubs are really important for the Cherries. Palace's place for next year is all but secure, and there is no real chance of getting a European spot, so they will be one of those clubs whose interest, or lack thereof, could go a long way in determining the relegation battle. Palace did beat Bournemouth 1-0 in December.
Sunday:
Aston Villa v. Chelsea (Villa Park, 10:15am, NBCSN). Villa will host their second match of the week against a club looking for a Champions League spot, this time hosting Chelsea. Chelsea currently sit in 4th position, with a 3 point cushion over 5th place Man United, so claiming 3 points in this match against a relegation battling club will be seen as vital. How vill come out and attack will be interesting to watch, as they currently are worst in the league in goals against, having allowed 56 goals in 28 matches, for a 2 goal a game average. Chelsea did win 2-1 win the clubs met at Stamford Bridge in December.
That will get us through the weekend, I will look to provide an update Monday before next week's busy mid-week schedule.
Enjoy the return of the PL and the relegation battle!
