First you have to congratulate the players and coaches for winning a share of the SEC title because it's been a while since A&M has accomplished it (2014). We've had some disappointing seasons lately and not many expected much from this team considering all the freshmen and key losses from last year. But the freshmen class is one of the best in the country and they helped elevate the seniors to a championship, so it was fun to watch this season. That's why it's hard to predict seasons because every year is different with new faces and chemistry.

Auburn was ranked but I didn't think they were much better than anyone else we have played lately. The first half was a bit rough and sloppy at times, although we should have scored a couple goals and Lopez missed her second PK of the season. Thankfully the second half was much better, especially the last 30 minutes of the match. 2 nice goals and plenty of possession. Taylor Pounds played her best game of the season today so hopefully this continues for her going forward. The back line was ok but continue to play around with it a bit too much in the back (sometimes the GK fault) and it results in unnecessary turnovers that turn into scoring chances. Lopez and Kolb had strong games on the outside flanks, while Olivieri and McCain took their scoring chances well. I thought the ref today was not good at all.

A&M is probably the best team in the SEC and I look forward to a rematch with Arkansas in the title game if we both take care of business. We have a lot of momentum and the chemistry is good. It would set up the Spring season nicely if we could finish it off. It's been a good season and it's been rewarding to watch these freshmen mesh so well with the upperclassmen.

Our team plays more and more the way euro clubs think: get up a goal and shift to defense. Keep pushing the ball forward but don't focus on excess goals at the risk of de-stabilizing the defense. If you get a second goal up put the game away. It's a slow game and crisp passing is the call sign. Requires patience. And of course the striking is ferocious when it comes. My guess is Jimena has been transformative with her talent, skill, and experience from Mexico.

The Arkansas game got away from us strategically because we were a little out-talented and it was before this team fully gelled. There is always the question of whether we also got out-coached. But it was close and both teams validated their play in that game other than Arkansas's loss to Carolina also in a single goal margin game.

The games are tightening in the league. It's palpable. I hope we continue to see progress in ball control and smart passing. And hope we see other teams go deeper towards the Women's College Cup this year. If we can mature our play just a bit more we could do well all the way.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach G Guerrieri
Opening Statement

"Obviously, I am very, very proud of our players. We didn't play the best first half. A lot of that you can chalk up to the way Auburn played and how hard they played. We just needed to clean things up. That was our message at halftime that it was going to be all about us and the way that we needed to keep the game clean again, simplify our passes, simplify everything that we do so we can do it all quicker. It's one thing just talking about but another for the players to go out and do it. Two great goals, Barb (Barbara Olivieri) and Addie (McCain), to get the goals. Taylor Pounds was fantastic in the middle midfield. She was kind of our engine today, and then you had a lot of cool heads like Taylor Ziemer and (Addie) McCain and the rest. Really, really proud of them. It was big time to win this league. You look at how crummy 2020 has been on so many fronts, and we talked about how we can make this special, and these players went out and made a lot of sacrifices to put themselves in this position. And here they are, they get to lift a trophy at the end and do it at home which is really fun."

On the building of confidence to the SEC Tournament and hopes for a bid to the NCAA Tournament
"These players came to Texas A&M to compete for championships and win championships. This is our 18th conference championship. Obviously, it's something that I am incredibly proud of, but we've got business to take care of. There's an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament that's on the line for whoever wins the tournament. We're going to go to the tournament and be with the only team who beat us this year, Arkansas. That's obviously going to be a challenge along with the others that we can see before that day even comes around. We'll be on the other side of the tournament field from Arkansas, but it's never easy and never a cakewalk in that tournament - ever.

Senior defender Jimena Lopez
On how the team responded to adversity when faced with such a unique season

"I think that it is a testament to how well we did as a team. I think we haven't had a single positive since we started preseason, and I am just really proud of the team how they have handled themselves. Having so many freshmen and coming to college, I mean, it's hard not to go out, it's hard not to go out and meet other people. Just being locked in your room is not so fun. Big shout out to my teammates, to the medical staff, to the athletic trainers who do such a good job taking care of us. Hopefully, we can go on and win a second championship in a week.

On the confidence boost from winning the conference title
"We are really happy that we got this title. It gives us confidence, and it gets us hungry to do it all over again. Through the tournament, we have the chance to be absolute champions, not co-champions, so we are definitely looking for that."

Senior midfielder Addie McCain
On today's SEC championship clinching win

"This feels incredible. It's been a while since Texas A&M has done this, my freshman year was the last time when we won the SEC tournament. It's something that is hard to do and especially with everything we had to endure this season. It's an awesome feeling to get a trophy and a ring at the end of it."

On how they settled into the game
"I think the first half was chaotic. With it being a championship game in our minds, everyone seemed to be a little nervous. It takes a little bit to get into your game but we were able to stay positive and stick to what we know. We knew that we would catch a rhythm and be able to do what we do best. That was the goal going out of halftime and we were able to make things work there at the end."

On Jimena Lopez's performance tonight
"She is a special player. Even if we were to get another chance at a penalty kick, I would still send her out there. We have all the faith in the world in her, but it just wasn't her moment. We've needed her so many other times and she has been able to step up and be there. Our team motto has been 'I got your back' and after her missed penalty kick, we rallied around her and had her back. Which brought us to scoring our two goals in the end."

On the halftime player-led discussion
"It was just a big conversation that had each of us jumping in to say what we thought. We thought we could have been applying more pressure on them and connecting more passes. Each person had a different perspective and were able to build off one another. We knew we needed to stick to our game plan and calm down. It ended up working out and that just shows how special this team can be with encouraging each other and talking."

Great win. It's great being co-champs.

Does anyone know anything about the spring season. It sounds like an NCAA tournament is planned, assuming things just don't fall apart. Does anyone know when? Do we have games scheduled for the spring, or do we just go into the NCAA tournament? I can't see our being left out regardless of what happens in the SEC tournament.

In the spring. We will play some spring games (non-conf. games) in preperation.

The last I saw NCAA Division 1 plans a spring season starting February 3 and a 48 team tournament with the selections on April 18 and the College Cup May 13-17. There will be only 17 at-large teams so winning the automatic bid in Orange Beach would be huge.
Jimena Lopez made the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week:
"M Jimena Lopez, Texas A&M: The left back/winger was in excellent form, helping the Aggies to a 2-1 win against LSU. She scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, completing 85% of the passes she attempted." Note that there were no ACC games last week. The ACC Tournament starts today.

NCAA announced that it's tentatively scheduled for May 13-17 in Cary, NC. The women's and men's events will be held jointly.

my guess is they NCAA isn't thinking that far ahead. My guess is MBB and WBB is top priority

Of the two all the rest of the NCAA and the other NCAA tournaments are like 90% funded by the MBB Div 1 National Championship Tournament. So yeah.

Thanks to the posters who are up on and willing to share the tournament information.

I think it's a really good point about the funding that the basketball tournament provides to non-revenue sport championships. Let's hope, first for the sake of the people in our nation, and secondly for the sake of our athletes and the fans, that the virus can be brought under control soon so we can return to normal.

I wouldn't mind them pushing it back a month or two just to be sure.
