Not directly related to the subject of this thread but I just read that UCLA coach Amanda Cromwell resigned from UCLA last Friday. So now both Southern Cal and UCLA are looking for coaches. Cromwell won the National Championship in 2013 and went to 2 other College Cups at UCLA.

Shame deciding the national champion on PKs...again.
What alternative do you suggest?

A replay? That would be an expensive proposition, requiring multiple extra hotel days, another day of renting the stadium, inconvenience for fans, more interference with finals, etc.

Unlimited overtime? That would just lead to really bad soccer by exhausted players at some point, likely leading to a fluke win.

What's a realistic alternative to PKs after 20 minutes of OT?
Oh, I have no alternative. That's why I posted a sad face instead of a thumbs down. It's how the sport works.

I just find it disappointing that they couldn't find a winner through 2OTs. It always makes me feel worse for the losing side.

I see that Amanda Cromwell is the new head coach at the Orlando Pride.

Thanks for the insight and write-ups. The overall civility and expertise on this board makes the posts a pleasure to read.

I'm glad FSU won. I'm actually more excited that BYU lost. We lived in Oregon for 10 years and through the insight of the PAC 12 fans at Oregon and Oregon State learned how deservedly they are despised in that part of the country. Think of tu on steroids. There was a reason that the Utes were asked to join the PAC 12 and not BYU. BYU is simply too much trouble, and moving the final to Monday is just one example of that. I would have told BYU that the game is going on schedule; if they don't want to play - they forfeit.

As far as a solution for ties, why not try what the NHL does and reduce the number of players on the pitch for overtime. That should open up the field and make scoring easier. How about for the two overtimes allowing only eight or nine players on the field with unlimited substitutions. If after two ten minute periods there is still no score, then go to penalty kicks.

It's pretty crazy to think that BYU almost won the title without scoring a goal at the College Cup. Great effort from them though. FSU finally gets the title after losing a couple PKs in the final game over the last 4 years. For once the best team in the country actually won the title.

Have we forgotten that NCAA Tournament games used to go 150 minutes (yes, 60 minutes of OT) before going to PKs?
