Time to get the next generation ready. A little surprised Morgan not included as she's just 32. Great to see Pugh back in the fold. I'm wondering what's going on with Trinity as she's not named to the squad but she's a very dynamic player.

The article mentions Trinity and says that she was invited to practice with the team. Saying that she is very gifted and will soon be a part of the team but needs time to adapt to National Team Level play without the pressure.

"Neither Morgan or Rapinoe are on the SheBelieves Cup roster, in addition to the absences of Tobin Heath and Christen Press. Andonovski said those players had been left off to make room for the newer players needing to prove themselves"

We have been saying this on the board for years, but took them losing to finally realizes this would be a good for the program

Glad Rapinoe is off. Her skills are waning and (I believe) she was a negative influence on the team. Time for new blood and better attitude.

Heath and Press are both 33 and Morgan is 32, so next Women's World Cup is 2023 meaning they will be 33-34. I think they all will be part of the club for that World Cup, and all 3 still have a lot to offer.

We needed to get past Lloyd and Rapinoe, but I think the three of them should still be part of the plans for the next WC

Frankly, I thought Press was our best scoring threat last year in the run of play

The point was that we have been saying for years that younger talent should be used in the SheBelieves Cup and other non-Olympic/World Cup events to give them more experience. When they only had the same team over and over again no other talent was being developed for the USWNT. This was being done on purpose, keeping younger talent off and protecting the older players. And it has hurt the development of the National Team

No, I agree completely. I was just clarifying that I think the three of them will still be a part of the WNT plans. I got the point.

Andonovski has said you need to be playing and in form to be called into the USWNT. Ertz hasn't played at all since the Olympics and for lack of a better word, is basically retired right now. She didn't play for Chicago after the Olympics and they traded her to the new NWSL team in LA in December, but she hasn't signed a contract with them.

Angel City FC has came out and said Ertz is not planning to play for them in 2022, but they still hold her rights.

I wonder why? I know she played for Chicago for a long time, but being in LA puts her closer to her husband who plays for the Arizona Cardinals and her family. I wonder if maybe she wants to have kids or just have a year off to focus on getting fully healthy. She's only 29.

Is Horan expected to play the holding MF in Ertz' absence?

I think if we were in a competitive match right now, then yes, Horan is the best option at holding mid. But I think Vlatko would like to get her more into the attack. For SheBelieves, I'm guessing Morgan Gautrat and Andi Sullivan in the holding roles? Bit of a guess at this point but those are the two I'd be looking at.

USWNT must urgently get younger, and Vlatko Andonovski is right to look beyond veterans at SheBelieves Cup (espn.com)

Julie Foudy wrote a piece defending the coaches for picking youth over the veterans. She claims she is writing the piece because of the outpouring of people saying where are the veterans.

Bullsh_t!!!!

She is righting this piece in my opinion to appease the veterans that were left off the roster and are not happy with it and need someone putting their names out there. I really feel that the USWNT did long term damage to the team by only keeping the marquee names for money purposes over developing younger talent for the good of the team. Now you have created personalities that think they are bigger than the team and don't need to compete the same way the did before and have a lack of experience with the replacements coming of age.

The USWNT team has lost it luster as the Team to Beat, no one is going to fear them or just accept the loss anymore. At least for a long time.

Just curious, which veterans do you think were left off the roster and not happy about it? Granted I haven't done a lot of searching but I've not heard any grumbling from Rapinoe, Morgan, Press, or Heath about being left out. Rapinoe and Morgan seem to be inching very close to retirement. Press took last year off and Heath appears to be staying at Arsenal through the international break, so I don't think any of them expected to be called in.

I have seen social media grumbling about those veterans not being there so Foudy's article seems accurate in that sense. I just haven't seen those veterans complaining as you imply.

Listen, I don't disagree that some veterans stayed too long. But I think people on message boards and social media are making a lot of speculations about why they stayed too long and most of those reasons are not entirely accurate.

Agreed. Also, Foudy's article lays out why there's lot more younger players in roster now given the tight window and the double importance of WCQ.

For those who don't watch NWSL…you guys are going to love Sophia Smith. Already seeing glimpses here in the first 10 minutes, but she is something special.

Game looked like Rose Levelle and 10 stooges. Most of the players look like their ceiling is role players and backups. The the sub of Rodman looks interesting. Rodman might be a good player. Smith and Pugh were not impressive at all, I expected more.

What about Jaelene Hinckle? Is she still playing? She is a solid defender who was held off the USWNT possibly for non-playing reasons (sports.yahoo.com; article by Eric Adelson dated July 25, 2018). .

Think a lot of that is rust (lots of sloppy touches) as NWSL season hasn't started yet. Macario looked pretty good in combining with Lavelle.

Rodman is going to be really really good. She looks to be very athletic, good instincts in finding open spaces in the box and pretty decent technical skills it seems. I know it's small sample size but there's a reason why she's signed the largest NWSL contract in history at 19 years old.

I agree with this. They never churned the bottom of the roster to find the best players.

Meantime, the US beat NZ 5-0 today, but that wasn't the story. A NZ defender gave up three own goals in half. It's apparently some sort of record.

Several players looked way better today, of course New Zealand was very rusty and didn't put up much fight. Really liked Huerta, Hatch and Pugh today. Let's see how they do Wednesday.

Not only an own goal hat trick, but a perfect one at that. Left foot, right foot and head. All in one half. They are calling it an "imperfect hat trick".

Think both England and France are hosting their own tournaments at the same times. At least the competition should be better han CONCACAAF teams, even if they are not the marquee match ups we are used to seeing.
