Were you also a three-legged dog in a previous life? I need to update my spreadsheet.

No but I really have a 3 legged dog.

Yeah. Maybe Kevin the 3 legged Dog was one of them.

Too soon?

Definitely changed the direction of the shot but still a great effort by Cowell. Second goal was really well worked off a turnover deep in Slovakia end.

US wins the group woth 2-0 victory over Slovakia. Hope they get the 3rd place team from Group A. Avoid Group D if at all possible
Never mind miss read the 3rd place standings

1. It's Varas, not Vargas (not to correct, just to inform)
2. Yes it's too soon. He's less than 2 years removed as a fired MLS assistant coach. This is his first head coaching experience unless you count USSF DA youth programs. I'm not sure that's enough to make him the USMNT coach. We've really only seen him for 4 real games (U20 qualifying and these 3 group games in a youth WC)
3. He's very close with Luchi Gonzalez, who just left the NT program to return to MLS.

4. Oscar Pareja should be the USMNT coach. bottom line.

Here is the Rd of 16 schedule and bracket for remainder of tournament:

USA v. New Zealand (Tues, 12:30pm, FS2)
Gambia v. Uruguay (Thur. 12:30pm, FS+)

Uzbekistan v. Israel (Tues. 4:00pm, FS+)
Brazil v. Tunisia (Wed. 12:30pm, FS2)

Colombia v. Slovakia (Wed. 12:30pm, FS+)
England v. Italy (Wed. 4pm, FS2)

Argentina v. Nigeria (Wed. 4pm, FS+)
Ecuador v. Korea Republic (Thur., 4pm FS+)

So Gambia looked good in opening rounds, knocking an always tough France side out of the tournament, will be a tough match up for them though against Uruguay. Brazil look like the class of their quarterfinal group and on the other side of the bracket Argentina have looked really good, as well as England and Colombia.

Might google Lionel Scaloni's coaching resume

Never said "absolutely hire Varas as national team head coach", but I also don't think its ridiculous to have him in a conversation.
I'd still rather hire someone that has already proven they can do it, and money should be no object. I'd be giving Varas the Olympics team for sure though.

Pretty much the same lineup as the opening match against Ecuador with Cowell replacing Quinn.

Not sure what the Kiwi keeper was doing on Wolff's shot, but I'll take the goal. Looks like he pulled his hand back thinking it was going wide. Don't see that too often.

Will Pukstas start next game? Who would he replace? Edelman?

I would probably keep Wiley in the XI, bringing in Paredes after 60-65.

Yes, we play winner of Gambia and Uruguay on Sunday. Their match is tomorrow (Thursday) so we will have two extra days of rest.

Looks like it's Uruguay up next. One of their starters got a red card right before HT. They played 10v10 in the 2nd half (Gambia got a red card in the 16th minute).

What's the scouting report on Uruguay? Our defense is legit but I'd say we have yet to play a really dynamic attacking team.

In the group stage they beat Iraq 4-0, lost to England 3-2, and beat Tunisia 1-0. They beat Gambia 1-0 yesterday, playing the entire second half 10v10. The goal was in the second half from 24 yards out during the run of play and should have been saved by a decent keeper, IMO. They had a couple other decent chances to score, but didn't, obviously.

Really who is to say what any of that means when we don't know anything about these U20 squads. Seems like they lost their only game against a decent squad.

They will only have 2 days rest after playing 45+ minutes with 10 on the field, so that certainly bodes well for us.

Bradley hitting them with the "2-1" on repeat at the end, definitely done something similar to that back in the day.
You play tournaments in Texas, and a lot of teams from Mexico will come up to play. They also didnt handle losing very well

Pretty much caused the OG. Wynder went to make an easy clearance on a cross and slipped and put it into our own net.

Took to long to adjust to Uruguays own adjustments about halfway through the first half. Overall, got another batch of players showing promise, we will see what new players push into the roster for next World Cup

I googled. Scaloni had a 20-year professional career as a player before moving into coaching. He played all over Europe also, including in the 2006 World Cup for Argentina. Those credentials are competitive with any NT coach in the world.
Varas never played a professional game. I like Mikey personally, but I'm not sure you helped your case to be considered for USMNT head coach. I'm not arguing against Mikey, but to your point, we'd all take Scaloni (or someone with his resume') over Varas right now.
