Most of the DFW games got rained out last night and are being played today. Daughter's team had a 4-hour lightning delay. I fought traffic for an hour and 15 minutes to get there for a 6pm KO. They didn't start until around 9:15 pm and played 10 minutes before another delay. The refs finally decided to postpone, but the coaches couldn't decide if the game should restart from the beginning or at 2-0 with 29 minutes left in the 1st half. That argument took another 30 minutes.

What's the argument? Am I missing something? You restart from the moment the match was suspended.

yea, I know that, but I was dad last night. You get 2 stubborn coaches that don't know the rules combined with a referee crew that doesn't know the rules and add that to a neutral site administrator that doesn't care about the rules and you get a boatload of wasted time.

I was just waiting in the parking lot like every other parent until I had to go to the restroom. Refs realized I was there and asked me. Nobody had a rule book (I did in my trunk) and nobody thought to look it up on the UIL site until I suggested it. So effin frustrating.

I was hesitant to help also cuz I'm very aware of any conflict of interest. All it takes is an accusation and the next thing you know there's a stupid protest situation

Yeah. Comedy of errors. We can all make errors of judgement. You never want to make an error in Law.

Did they at least decide to do the right thing? I would be cringing at the idea that they decided to restart from the beginning and then the team that was winning ends up losing. That's a protest I would want no part of.

Lots of rain in the forecast the next few days. Hopefully doesn't cause too much chaos.

We play tomorrow night at College Station HS. Looks like about 25% chance so that, coupled with it being a turf field, should be good to go.

As long as there is no lightning and not torrential, should be good to go.

It's not like they're playing at UT Dallas where a drop of spit can cancel a whole weekend.

I was an AR on a boys' playoff game Wednesday. The favored team lost and they were pissed. But they really lost to a better team that played better that day. I was not on the original game, but it started 0-0 with 10 minutes played Tuesday, so it was even.

After the game, though, some angry dad walked into our locker room cursing out the referee and threatening the whole crew, blaming us for his team losing the game. Evidently he walked through a back door. It was a neutral site game to maybe he snooped it out beforehand. But the guy ran away when the referee called the police officer that was at the other door and the other assistant grabbed his phone to record. I grabbed my flag ready to throw down if we needed to.

Yikes. That should get an auto strike 3 in the UIL policy. It won't (it only counts as 1) but it should be 3.

Looking at the bracket it's amazing to see Elisik has become a good program. We kicked their asses all the time back in the day at Katy Taylor.

What change? They're not Hispanic anymore? I graduated in 02 and we constantly dominated Elisk and Hastings. The only Hispanic school that ever challenged us was mayde creek.

I think we played Alief Taylor my senior year.

They must have gotten an actual coach rather than someone that benefited from having a bunch of top flight club players.

That's an interesting thought. Out of curiosity, would you say the same thing about a kid that's a great student and finishes top of the class?

I would. There are plenty of great parents that raise great kids that are mediocre students. There are plenty of good students that have a ****ty moral compass that they learned from their parents.

Absolutely true, but there are probably fewer valedictorians that were naturally bright, but overcame lousy parents. Seems like it takes a combination of both to reach those heights.

From a sporting standpoint, mom or dad probably spent countless afternoons in the backyard, haul the kids to 3 practices a week, drive hours to games each weekend. It takes a lot of sacrifice on the part of a parent to get an athlete to that level. Just as you stated, there are probably plenty of athletic freaks that get there without parental involvement, but there's probably a lot more who wouldn't have made it without their help. In those cases, I could see a parent being justified in feeling a shared sense of their kid's accomplishment.

This is no way justifies confronting a ref in a dressing room which was the initial point of the post; however, so I'll stop derailing.

El Campo has both programs playing next week. Proud to see the El Campo girls team make it this far. Four years ago they scored 2 goals all season. The community has really pulled together to improve the program.

The boys have a chance for their first Regional Final win as well.

This is a repeat for both 7 Lakes programs.

I was hoping we'd face you all but Georgetown whooped our arse.

It was only 2-0 at half with both goals being ones they shouldn't have scored. First was just miscommunication and second literally popped out of goalies hands into goal. Ugh! As I said earlier in thread, our varsity goalie got a concussion two days before playoffs and I don't think she'd have let either of those goals in. However the JV goalie stepped up and was awesome. So proud of her having her first three varsity starts be playoff games. She is not a club player and has only been in goal in HS the last two years. Her main sport is volleyball. After both goals the defense gave her a big hug and let her know to keep fighting.

In the end it was 6-0 and a clear example of the diversity of high school. We have 4 top level club players, a half dozen competitive club players and that's it. It was clear Georgetown was club from top to bottom. We didn't sub a single girl the entire first half, because it is a drop off once you hit our bench, and they subbed probably 7-8 girls with no drop off. They also had four goalies to our one JV goalie.

Good luck against them! Take em down for us!

A ref story from Saturday… we had a friendly against Austin Sting ECNL. As I arrive the younger girls are playing and I happen to walk up as the ref calls a delay of game on the goalie for holding the ball and awards a free kick. All the parents are confused and I gather this was out of no where.

Cut to our game and the last 5 minutes. We are up 3-2 and our goalie makes a save. She holds it, but not for an obscene amount of time, and he blows the whistle, gives her a yellow, and awards a free kick. No warning that I ever saw. This is a friendly that has been super well run and played. Competitive, physical, but completely clean. I hadn't heard a single parent even so much as argue a throw in call. So we are all confused. Then one of our girls decides to be a bit of a tool. She stands in front of the ball, he says you need to give 10, and she plays dumb "No I don't. I do?? Can you show me how far that is?" Admittedly being a pain. He gives her a yellow. She keeps yapping as she walks to the 10yd mark and he gives her a second yellow and kicks her out of the game. Our coach walks to mid field, stays on the sideline, and yells "Ref?? Ref??" The ref ignores him as he writes down the cards, then turns to the sideline and gives our coach a yellow. Lol. Our coach yells "Ref! It's a friendly!!"

We block the free kick and win but it was wild. Out of nowhere he seemed to insert himself into the game. If the girls being mouthy then yellow and kick her off but let us sub or something. A red in the last few minutes of a one goal friendly was wild. Both sets of parents were just laughing about it. Both coaches seemed flabbergasted as well.

Also apparently in the younger girls game he tried to stop the half at 35 min. The coaches both told him that they were playing 40 and he said something to the effect of "Nope. You're not paying me enough for that." I hope he enjoyed his pay because I can't foresee him ever getting asked to ref a friendly for either club ever again.

Parents that were great athletes that end up with kids that are great athletes are rarely the problem. It's the parents that were decent athletes that end up with kids that are decent athletes but have the money and time to pay to try and make the better athletes. These are the ones that get delusional and think they're kids are great athletes and it's compounded by the amount of money they've spent. They get a warped sense of reality within their own heads.

No thanks. But, there's always a kicker right? The kicker here is I live in the attendance zone of the school that lost. I don't have kids in the school district and could give two sh ! ts about it. I could see this dad at the local 7-11 one day. But he won't have the balls to say anything there. I find these type are really brave from the stands but wouldn't say a peep if they saw me at Walmart, cuz they're really giant cowards in real life. Still, I keep my .45 in my car

I think youth sports officials need thicker skin and to realize it's no different than being a fan at Kyle field or bluebell park. Of course parents protest what they see as a bad call just like any normal fan at a sporting event. Biggest difference is parents are usually 10' off the touchline and may be right behind the AR. I of course don't condone confronting an official, players or coaches and anyone that does should not be allowed back. It's all part of the game of competitive sports and honestly, what makes it more fun. There's nothing worse than a 8-0 beat down with disinterested fans killing the time on their phones

Friendlies can be miserable from a ref POV. They're friendly before you start, but they usually don't end that way. And the teams usually lowball on the payment for the ref. For a ref, it's still the same amount of time and same amount of work, but for some reason, you're expected to get paid less cuz it's a "friendly"

I had a college spring game yesterday. Men's D2 v. JUCO. different rules and different rosters, so we had to find a middle ground. Then there's the one doofus in the stands who's yelling about yellow cards to every player who was kicking the ball away to slow the game down. I chuckled with some players because they WANTED to kick the ball away. They were all tired AF cuz it was hot and the offseason fitness isn't the same as in-season fitness. Besides, they'd all just got back from Spring Break and were still sweating out some of the alcohol. It's just a different mentality. And we got paid MORE than the normal league fee BECAUSE it was a scrimmage.

Friendlies blow. They often aren't and when the coaches come up before the game and say "please don't show a card we will just take the player off" you know you are in for a long day.

Horrible take. Youth sports should be about competitiveness, yes, but we should be encouraging a culture of competitiveness without negativity.

That's a pipe dream, though.

What parents need to realize is that the vast majority of our youth sports officials are either youths themselves or adults donating their time (or getting paid very little for their time) because they believe in youth sports as a vehicle for developing well-rounded people. And I guarantee you (because I hear it from the kids themselves) the players are embarrassed by your outbursts and would rather you cheer them on instead of getting riled up at the referees.

I hope you feel like a really big man after you shout at a 17 year old because he called a foul on your kid.
