They are the absolute worst. If your kid is a great athlete, that says nothing about you as a parent. Vice versa.
That's an interesting thought. Out of curiosity, would you say the same thing about a kid that's a great student and finishes top of the class?
I would. There are plenty of great parents that raise great kids that are mediocre students. There are plenty of good students that have a ****ty moral compass that they learned from their parents.
Absolutely true, but there are probably fewer valedictorians that were naturally bright, but overcame lousy parents. Seems like it takes a combination of both to reach those heights.
From a sporting standpoint, mom or dad probably spent countless afternoons in the backyard, haul the kids to 3 practices a week, drive hours to games each weekend. It takes a lot of sacrifice on the part of a parent to get an athlete to that level. Just as you stated, there are probably plenty of athletic freaks that get there without parental involvement, but there's probably a lot more who wouldn't have made it without their help. In those cases, I could see a parent being justified in feeling a shared sense of their kid's accomplishment.
This is no way justifies confronting a ref in a dressing room which was the initial point of the post; however, so I'll stop derailing.
