So you're telling me that NBA basketball players are bigger, stronger and more talented NOW than they were 40 years ago?

SHOCKING!

If Chris Anderson played 40 years ago, he'd be Bill Walton.

If Steve Blake played 40 years ago, he'd be Pete Marovich.

If Joakin Noah played 40 years ago, he'd be Bill Russell.

What's your point?

Something pointed out during David Robinson Night the other day. He has scored 70+ in a game... something Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, Charles Barkely and Hakeem never did.

Another interested tidbit, that year DRob won the scoring title John Lucas would come to his house at 4 in the morning and make him go run. Lucas might've still been on crack at the time.

Scoring 100 pts in a row is crazy. But Chamberlain averaged 50 pts per game that season. That blows my mind. For every "off night" that he only scored 30pts, he had another night were he put in 70 pts.

That 70 point night from Robinson was kinda fishy. He was neck and neck with somebody for the scoring title. It came down to last game of season. It didn't matter for playoff standings, so the Spurs didn't care. To win the title, the Spurs just gave him the ball on every possession.

MassAggie - Players are bigger and faster now, but less skilled. Comparing journeymen of today to previous generation's superstars is ridiculous.

Anderson is just big athletic guy who plays great defense. Walton did that too. He also could score and was greatest post passer of all time.

Check out Pistol Pete on youtube. It's one of coolest basketball videos you'll ever see. He'd still score a ton and thrill today's crowds.

Bill Russell and Noah? I'd still pick a 70 year old Russell over Noah.

drob was head to head with Hakeem that year. an interesting stat for Hakeem: He still ranks number 8 all time in steals. the only center and i believe the only non-guard ahead of him is scottie pippen, who is a small forward. now that is really crazy.

How is that fishy?

That's happened for years. Shaq did it too, but he couldn't muster but like 40 points. David Thompson and George Gervin did it. Jordan scored 23 consecutive points in a game for the Bulls in the second to last game of the season (that didn't matter) and the Bulls still lost.

it should be noted that a HUGE reason Wilt dominated so much on the offensive end was the lack of an offensive goaltending rule.

he would just go and tap every single ball in that was sitting on the cylinder.

and the 100 point game...well his teammates were helping him get to 100 that night.

Robinson scoring 70 an those other games where teammates blatantly help the star in a meaningless game should be qualified when mentioned. You don't see that very often. LeBron's 30 straight or whatever against the Pistons holds up better.

I know he was an All-Star game MVP and was known for being a very good offensive player, but it still looks a little out of place to see Tom Chambers on that list of 60 or more in a game. He may be the most anonymous 20,000+ point scorer in NBA history.

Heh...a slight exaggeration, but that dunk over Mark Jackson is his signature NBA moment. If I were pressed to name the players who have scored more than 20K points in a career, though, he would have been well down the list.

This is a timeless argument. At 32 years old, I did not see Wilt or Russell play. I have seen plenty of footage. Wilt was every bit of the athlete that Lebron is without the weight training and 5-6"" taller. Wilt dunked a 12' goal without the ally (only man ever to do that). He ran in the Olympics, etc. He is probably the biggest and best athlete ever. (I believe Shaq had a 35" vertical his rookie year and could not dunk a 12' goal for some perspective.)
Wilt claimed to have a vertical well over 40" (46". Some would agree that he did in his prime.

Russell was a true 6'9" and "shut down" the best(big) athlete ever. I would not be surprised if Lebron 6'9" is in shoes. I would be happy to have Russell defend anyone. He made every team he ever played on the best team.

Give Russell and Wilt today's training......as good maybe even better then James IMO.

Wilt spent a lot of time trying to win titles at the end and only scored 15-20 points doing it.

Wilt wasn't just some really tall playing against normal people. There were plenty of tall guys playing back then. He was taller, faster, and better athlete than them.

He was also one of best volleyball players in the world.

The NY Knicks made a huge push to sign Wilt Chamberlain, but he turned them down. He was 51 years old at the time.
