Wilt held the Kansas high jump record for a long time. Yes, he was 7'-1", but can you imagine the talled players of today doing thst. Shaq would have killed himself trying to high jump. Imagine the guy from Orlando with some moves. That was Wilt.

I assume Wilt did high jump old school technique.

FYI
Shaq had a 42" vertical according to http://www.answers.com/topic/shaquille-o-neal

Shaq's vertical was 36" at LSU. I doubt he ever got it higher than that as he gained weight.

hehe Kobe 62 Dallas 61 after 3. he couldve gone for 100 that night had phil let him.

who has the genius that mentioned Wilt used to just go an tap every ball in due to no offensive rebounding rule.

also, he would just throw the ball to himself on FT's off the backboard.

36"??
quote:
Brown showed his confidence by naming the youngster a co-captain, and O'Neal, who had only an 16-inch vertical jump during his senior year of high school, did his part by working out and increasing his leap to 42 inches.

Shaq never got close to 42".

Just to bump the thread and continue the argument:

My article is in black and white as well and 6" from 42" is close.... and I am surprised he even tested his vertical at the combine... that is probably a last recorded measurement. Also, from experience, a vertical in those ranges can fluctuates 6" on any given day.

15% is a pretty big fluctuation. Verticals are kinda on a bell curve. Over 40 is ridiculous. Over 42 only happens to a tiny fraction of a ridiculously small minority. Rudy Gay is the heaviest player to reach 40" or more at the combine.

Some basketball verticals that are quoted are running verticals and some are standing.

Did that **** in three quarters.

Not only that, but Bryant put up 30 points int he 3rd quarter. I'd never seen anyone put together a game like that, and I kind of doubt that I ever will again.

Until LeBron plays the Sacramento Kings in December.

Max vertical is your best, whatever it takes. The NBA combine differentiates the two (see the link provided previously.

Spend some time looking at the NFL combine. There are a lot more 40"+ verticals there (all no step. I think there was a 250lb TE this year that was over 42".... NO STEP.
I bet some of these guys are over 45" max verticals. 42" Max vertical (not tested) would not be that elite in football.

An when I say from experience in my last post, I meant it. My vertical in my prime fluctuated 4" day to day easy. I would guess the larger the person the more the fluctuation.
