Yahoo is reporting that we signed him to a 3 yr. $10 million contract. I don't see how he didn't take up the whole MLE, but in any event, we still have over 2 million leftover to use on another player. Reports are saying that we are going hard after Raja Bell.

that is crazy if he took a deal for 3y/10mm...with having to pay most of his buyout on his own....seems like damn near his whole first year salary is going towards his buyout unless they let him off for cheap

Actually, I read somewhere that his buyout this summer is only $1 million. That's why this summer was always the projected time to bring him over. Remember the Spurs can pay $500k towards any buyout.

Don Harris just reported that Splitter's portion of the buyout is 1.2 million (even after Spurs pay their 500K). So almost half of his first year salary.

He also pointed out that Bonner is getting more than Splitter. Crazy.

he also said the Spurs struck out on a S&T for Josh Childress (what was that about? A backup plan for RJ is all I can imagine)

and he confirmed they are pushing for Raja Bell...who would be a decent pickup since he can hit 3s

Spurs have about 2.5mm left in the MLE and about 1.9mm left in the LLE, in addition to being able to resign Jefferson.

My favorite players left for the Spurs would be:
Matt Barnes
Raja Bell
Rasual Butler
James Jones
Antoine Wright

I'd take any two off that list.

I like the first two off that list the most.

Raja Bell is the only guy I can think of in the entire league that could approach the type of perimeter defense the Spurs had with Bowen, while also providing a decent deep threat.

I've heard Kobe has been involved with trying to lure him to LA. No doubt one of those "I'd hate to have to play against this guy" type of deals. My guess is that the Lakers will get him.

I've always liked Bell, but:
1. He is 34
2. He only played 6 games last year.
3. Kobe is recruiting him to be on the reigning-back to back champions
4. Dallas is offering him the vet min, where he may start at 2 with Terry off the bench, though Dallas may start two SFs instead of a SF/SG and go Butler/Marion. Bell obviously also used to play in Dallas
5. Miami has offered him the vet min.


Luckily his injury was to his non-shooting hand, not his shooting hand or legs.

A combination of him, and Butler or Barnes would be great.

Matt Barnes is a cancer. I wouldn't want him in SA.

Can you use the MLE and LLE together for one player or do you have to use them separately?

Separately. The LLE can only be used for 1-2 year contracts. The MLE can be used whole or split for multiple players. But neither can be combined with anything. And if you use cap space, you don't get either one.

Normally I'd agree, but in SA, there are probably enough character guys on the roster that a guy like Barnes would feel compelled to play nice. He'd be a nice player to take a chance on, is what I'm saying. Hell Stephen Jackson was pretty well behaved when he was a Spur.

raja bell to meet with kobe in LA....sounds like getting him will not come to fruition.

You never know. He'd get more money and PT in SA. Maybe he's just weighing his options. But in all likelihood, he's going to LA.

Splitter reportedly wore number 21 in Europe to idolize Timmy Duncan--gave it up and even dropped the "21" from his Twitter account to play alongside the Big Fundamental. I'm liking this guy more and more.

Spurs are also interested in James Jones. Decent outside shooter. He says a deal with the Silver and Black would be finalized if they offered him more than the minimum. Looks like we'll end up grabbing him instead of Bell. All of this according to fanhouse.com.

I'd love the combination of James Jones and Rasual Butler.

For 3y10mm, they can have Raja. Utah had to way overpay. Spurs offered like 2y/4mm. LA offered the vet min.

why is Utah paying premium for a spare part?

Because he is way cheaper than matching Portland's offer on Wesley Matthews.

You have to get something there after losing Korver, Brewer and Matthews.

Utah is one of those places where you have to overpay if you want black people to play there.

Matthews is a very solid young player. Really came on strong in the second half of the season. He is more of a defensive stopper-type, but hit 40% of his threes and scored 12ppg as a starter.

His dad actually played for the Spurs and was born in SA when his dad played there. He played college ball at Marquette.

One of the very good up and coming players.

Oh well, at least Bell went somewhere that he won't be a nuisance to the Spurs.
