The Grizzlies had serious discussions Wednesday with the Houston Rockets regarding a proposed deal that would swap second-year center Hasheem Thabeet for forward Shane Battier.

Yeah, I heard this too. Seems like a decent deal for the Rockets because we need a legimate Center prospect. Apparently the holdup is that we want a future first round pick.

Battier is getting old and we need some players who have a chance to develop into something. Might as well get something for him before he leaves. Thabeet may not develop but we need a big body just to try out.

dude dubbed himself "hasheem the dream" on twitter. sorry, there's only one dream in houston. besides, "hasheem the d-league dream" is more fitting.

i'll be severely disappointed if all we get out of yao's expiring (and insured) deal, jeffries' expiring deal, and battier (also expiring) is thabeet.

More teams trading lately are interesting in acquiring young players with upside, not old, known commodities only traded for expiring money.

no thanks. i'd rather take a retired shawn bradley than thabeet.

of course teams would prefer to acquire young talent, but there are still plenty of teams looking for financial breaks.

The west got weaker, so you would think the Rox are now trying to make a push for that 8th playoff spot, which means there is even LESS incentive for Adleman to give any meaningful playing time to a young center...

Just seems like a strange deal that doesn't make a ton of sense. Morey needs to draw a line in the sand and decide whether the team is trying to win now, or build for the future. Straddling this fence is doing nothing to make the Rox any better...

i like battier and he's actually having a nice season. but he also plays a position where you have some depth. with him gone, you've freed up 30 minutes a night to see what chase and williams can do with more playing time.

if you don't do something to thin out the roster, how long are guys like lee and williams going to put up with such a limited role on what isn't even that great a team?

so while i agree that we need to be making a push for the playoffs, i'm not convinced the current roster gets you there, so standing pat seems like a terrible option to me. i'd much rather try to win while also getting a good look at some of the other players on the roster.

the bottom line is that aaron brooks, chase budinger (last night excluded) and jordan hill have all failed to improve this season. that's part of why they've been difficult to move for fair value.

Good point, one of my frustrations with Aldeman. He is entrenched on his rotation and takes alot to change it.

One thing on Thabeets development. The guy has height and athleticism, but I don't think he has been developed real well. He also hasn't played real long. The coaching staff with the Grizzlies is Lionel Hollins, Henry Bibby, Johnny Davis, Damon Stoudamire (all former guards), and a couple guys who never played in the NBA.

I think if he worked with Hakeem, he could be an impact player, but maybe only servicable next year.

I love Shane. But we are SO deep at G/F with guys like Budinger and Williams wasting away on the bench. It's time to get younger IMO.

i would also hate to trade shane to memphis. i know we don't "owe" him anything and the rockets need to do what's best for them, but if all things were relatively equal, i'd love to see him on an eastern conference contender.

That's what I'm thinking. Send him to the Eastern Conference to a team that needs a glue guy. I wonder if we could send Battier and a pick for that Omar Asik guy from Chicago.

Chicago has been acting like Asik is the next Luc Longley or something. They're askin price has been steep for a noone.

I know they feel that way, but for as good of a defensive team as Chicago is -- I feel like they're missing a defensive ace at the 2/3 spot and that seems to be a pretty glaring hole when Boston has Ray Allen and Paul Pierce and Miami has Dwayne Wade and Lebron James. Tom Thibideau has experience working with Battier during his time with teh Rockets.

With the recent story of Johnny Flynn going to Houston, I could see a 3-way with Houston, Minny, and Grizz.

Grizz give up Thabeet and a player like a DeMarre Carroll, Xavier henry, or Hamad to get Battier

Minny give up Flynn to get someone like Aaron Brooks and (Grizz filler)

Houston give up Battier and Brooks to get Flynn and Thabeet.

That trade now kinda looks like crap now that I typed it, but who cares?

I know Brooks has not played well this season but he is much better than Flynn. Is he that pissed at our organization that we have to send him elsewhere? Can Flynn have any shot being just as good if not better than Brooks?

i hate to say never because when both players were drafted, obviously people thought more highly of flynn than brooks.

and flynn had that hip injury, so we haven't seen all that much of him.

but from what i've seen, i have no reason to think he'd be a marked improvement over brooks.

hopefully if brooks is traded, it's to another team.
