I think you are right Iowa. You gotta think that pacers 1st gets re-routed to Houston to complete the deal, since they wouldn't deal their own pick....

my guess is that it's structured similarly to the phoenix deal...they get the memphis pick, unless it's a lottery pick. if it's a lottery pick, they get indiana's pick instead.

From the Chronicle:

quote:
The Rockets made major changes to their roster at the trade deadline, sending Shane Battier and Ish Smith to Memphis for Hasheem Thabeet and a first-round pick, and Aaron Brooks to Phoenix for Goran Dragic and another pick, according to persons close to the deals.

Now I'm hearing that the Mayo to Pacers deal didn't get done before the deadline.

That could create an awkward locker room.

I guess with these deals Morey also shaved about $3M off of this season's payroll. Not sure if that gets the Rox under the Lux Tax line, but dollar for dollar saves the team double that.

So the combined deals look like:

Battier + Brooks

for

Dragic & Thabeet & 2 1st Rd Picks (likely between 15-20) & $6M in owner savings

I guess it looks a little better that way. Big winers are Lowry (no longer has look over his shoulder), Budinger (Starter now?) and Lee (Likely 1st guard off the bench).

New Depth Chart:

Lowry/Dragic
Martin/Lee
Budinger/TWill (or Lee)
Scola/PPatt
Hayes/Miller/Hill/Thabust

That's a whole big bucket of meh...

From Chad Ford:

quote:
They're trying like crazy. Morey has been one of the most active GMs over the last month. He made a big push for Carmelo Anthony. Tried to pry Deron Williams away from Utah. Made an aggressive play for second tier players like Nene and Danny Granger. Even went after the Kings' Samuel Dalembert. So far, he's come up empty.

Wednesday evening a number of GMs reported receiving multiple texts/calls from Morey proposing trades -- some big, some small, some outlandish.

Well, if you're going to go young, might as well go all the way young!

Lowry
Lee
Bud/TWill
PPatt
Hill/Thabeet

Trade away KMart & Scola and the other vets and go all the way young. Right now KMart and Scola have got to be looking at each other and wondering "WTF do we do now?"....

What's the count on draft picks the Rockets own now? Haven't seen if the Phoenix pick is first or second round, but let's assume it's second.

2011
Round 1 - Rockets, Knicks, Memphis
Round 2 - Rockets, Suns

2012
Round 1 - Rockets, Knicks
Round 2 - Rockets

Does that look right?

So far, I'm with the rest of you; this is still just 'meh' unless you do something with this stockpile of picks and secondary players. If something big doesn't happen in the draft like moving into the top 3 or a big FA this offseason, then I'll be really disappointed.

coop, the Phoenix pick is a 1st. Either theirs (if they make the playoffs) or Orlando's (If the Sun's miss the playoffs).

Oh, and the Rockets don't own the Knicks pick this year. They have the right to swap. So it's either Houston's pick or the Knicks pick that they have. Given the recent trades, it's likely the Rox just end up keeping their own pick.

in 2011, the rockets get the right to swap 1st rounders with the knicks, not their pick outright

in 2012, the rockets traded their pick to NJ for terrence williams, but still have the knicks' 1st rounder

So, that means the Rox have:

2011:

1st- Rox/Knicks (likely Rox) + Memphis/Indy (Whichever pick Memphis is sending, still unclear) + Phoenix/Orlando

2nd- Rox

2012:

1st - Knicks
2nd - Rox

Does anyone else have 4 1st rounders in the next 2 years? I know it's not always a matter of who puts together the best offer (we saw that with the Carmelo and Deron Williams crap this week), but we should be able to do something valuable with all these assets.

the memphis pick needs to be clarified...

apparently nobody knows whether the mayo deal got submitted in time. but the fact that the thabeet deal got done regardless leads me to believe that there's probably nothing about that pick becoming the indiana pick.

i read the memphis pick was lottery-protected, but have not seen any indication about what happens if memphis is in the lottery. i would hope we get their 2012 1st round pick with no protections.

Not bad, except the 2012 1st round Knicks pick is probably worse than our 1st rounder we gave up.

i think that's likely...

that deal with the knicks has definitely not played out the way morey hoped.

2012 is supposed to be the much stronger drafts.

2011, not so much.

Exactly. I don't remember if he's still around as a "special assistant" but if he's not, then we need to put some of the $3M we saved just now towards putting Hakeem on the payroll again.

The Grizzlies have added a new assistant coach to deal with the non-deal with the Pacers for OJ Mayo.

He won't get an answer. Hakeem is in Jordan right now. The country, not the player.

Besides Battier and Thabeet:

The Grizzlies also received rookie guard Ish Smith. They also sent to Houston second-year forward DeMarre Carroll and a lottery-protected first-round draft choice that can be used no earlier than 2013.

Draft pick after 2013 is good. The Grizzlies are never going to be a real contender and this draft class sucks.

Draft pick after Marc Gasol demands a trade to Bos/LA/NY/Miami is going to be worth a lot.

I think Thabeet is a good guy, but the guy is a stiff, the general feeling was that he doesn't know how to play, and he doesn't want to work.

However, the Rockets got something for Battier, so it worked out for them

From a Rocket fan board

Hakeem Olajawound.

An artificial version of the great one.
