Got some valid points even though I'm a diehard spurs fan. What do y'all think?

sure it does.

tyson chandler + dirk nowitzki are taller and younger than tim duncan and matt bonner.

therefore they win.

and therefore...the lakers are the champs over boston since the lakers are taller and younger.

I feel sorry for anyone who listens to this moron. The same idiot was on Letterman or Leno 2 weeks ago saying the Spurs and Lakers were the best teams in the west. He doesn't know what the **** he's talking about tbqh. There are people on this board who know more basketball than this guy.

You mean the Dirk Nowitzki that doesn't even pull down 7 boards/game? That Dirk Nowitzki? Interesting that you left out Dejuan Blair, who is #7 in the league in rebounds/48.

But it is all moot. Barkley was talking about scoring. Wanna bet which team scores more points in the paint?

He is absolutely right. The only people who think the spurs are better than the Mavs are spurs fans. With the injuries that happened, and for the Mavs to only be five back while playing a harder schedule, says plenty. If Parker is gone a month, the Mavs will pass them in the standings.

Chuck usually has good points but he's stretching a bit here. He says the Spurs are short a big man but then he elevates OKC and Dallas over them? Who are their big guys creating such an advantage?

The Lakers will continue to be the favorite, thats not even debatable. After that, I dont see how you pick anyone but the Spurs. The Mavs without Butler just dont have enough fire power. OKC? When is the last time they won any game vs. the Spurs?

The HUGE immeasurable here is the habit of winning. The Spurs have it down right now and that's a bigger factor than many give it credit for. I think that's what gives them a fighting chance against the Lakers.

Do you watch the Mavs at all? Chandler has been the best center in Basketball this year and that's not debatable. Now that Haywood has finally accepted his role, he has been a beast coming off the bench.

Of course its debatable. The Mavs absolutely destroyed the Lakers in the one game they played this year and have two more chances in the next two weeks to do it again. They are a terrible match up with the Mavs because of our two bigs.

Have you seen the moves they have made? Peja looks like the old Peja from his Kings days and Roddy is getting back to the Roddy of last year. Mix them in with Barrea just eating people alive with drives and passes and I would say it may even be a sweep.

OKC? When is the last time they won any game vs. the Spurs?

They will not be an easy out since the got Perkins to go along with Westbrook and Durant.

This might be the most far fetched statement I've ever read on this board and there are a lot of homers on here.

Dwight Howard would like to debate you.

Dwight Howard: 23.2 PPG, 13.9 RP, 2.3 BPG
Tyson Chandler: 10.4 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 1.1 BPG

Come talk to us when the Mavs don't blow their 1st round playoff series.

Oh yeah, Tyson is the best center in the NBA and the Mavericks are a lock for the Finals.

Almost spit up my coffee on the keyboard...haha

Chuck's not giving the Spurs the respect that they deserve and he knows it. The playoffs are a whole another animal and I don't think the Mavericks have the stomach to beat San Antonio. And with the way the standings are right now, they wouldn't face the Spurs, they would face the Lakers in the 2nd round and I don't think that poor man's Superman could beat Bynum/Gasol/Khlodom.

OKC still needs to gel as a team and I'm not ready to concede anything to a team whose center has yet to wear a uniform. The reality is that it takes a while to understand how to execute with a team and I believe that Perkins is overrated anyway.

The Spurs have a fighter's chance to beat the Lakers because they have beaten the Lakers in a playoff series before. Experience in the playoffs means everything and the Mavericks are much overrated in my opinion than the Spurs.

Plus, I like Poppovich more than Jim Carey anyways and he always has his team ready to play.

I hope you idiots save this thread for when the Mavs are holding the Larry O'Brien Trophy in June.

Stats do not mean everything when it comes to determining the best player at his position. Again, Chandler is the best center in the NBA for what he brings to his team. He turned a very good team to the best team in Basketball in less than a year.

I think the Spurs and Mavs are pretty even this year. If we meet in the playoffs I wouldn't be surprised at all if it goes 7.

I don't want any part of the Mavs this year. They're a really good team. I also don't buy the fact that the Spurs' championships give them a big edge over Dallas. The Mavs aren't OKC. Sure they haven't won it all, but they have been a playoff staple for the last decade and SA is a rival to boot.

When that series comes (and I see Dallas beating LA), it's gonna be a nail biter. I'll watch it out of duty, not enjoyment.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
the championships aren't what gives them an edge over dallas, it's a psychological edge more than anything. mavs have a little brother mentality from constantly being second fiddle to the spurs

The Mavs have beat the Spurs twice in the playoffs so that theory is null and void.

This feels a lot like '06 to me. I really believe the Spurs are the best team in the league. But I also believe Dallas is a bad matchup for them and could potentially beat the Spurs in the playoffs.

I don't worry about any other team. I worry a bit about the Mavs.

As much as I would hate to play the Mavs, I believe in a seven game series, I would rather play them than the Lakers. The spurs bugaboo (as seen in last night's second quarter) is their defensive rebounding. In our losses this year, it has been second chance points that have really hurt us. I do not want to see Pau/Bynum/Odom and the championship tested Lakers in the WCF.
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not too worried about the Mavs. I think the Spurs would keep Chandler in foul trouble and rip them apart inside (Manu/Tony/Hill a lot more than Tim) to score at a pace Dallas can't match.
ColoradoMooseHerd
How long do you want to ignore this user?
How is it Mental? Maybe for the Spurs.

In the past 5 seasons, the Spurs and Mavs have met 3 times in the playoffs.

2006 - Dallas won in 7 games
2009 - Dallas won in 5 games
2010 - San Antonio won in 6 games
sharkenleo
How long do you want to ignore this user?
it's more about the mavs' tendency to choke in the playoffs than anything. they have never come close to the success on the big stage that the spurs have had. both teams are significantly different from their squads in 2009 and earlier, so it just comes down to being mentally tough. personally, i don't see the mavs team having that mental toughness.

as for the 2006 series, well that was basically a gift from ginobili, one they managed to waste with an epic collapse in the finals. of course, that collapse would quickly be overshadowed the following season.

Colorado, I'm afraid that you're cherry-picking your dates. Why not look at the Duncan-Nowitski eras in total-- so back to the 98-99 season, Dirk's first.

That adds Spurs wins in '01 and '03.
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The Mavs have nearly as many epic playoff chokes as the Spurs have titles in the Duncan/Nowitzki era. That is the mental part people are talking about.

Mavs chokes:
Miami in the finals
lost to 8 seed Golden State in the first round in 6 games
lost to injury-riddled 7-seed SAS in the first round in 6 games

Those chokes are all in the last 5 years. The Spurs have only won one title in that span, but the count is still 4-0 in the Duncan/Nowitzki era.

To be fair though, that last choke isn't really a choke, it is evidence of what we are all saying: the Spurs are a better team because they are mentally tougher and just better at playoff basketball than the Mavs.
