Not so much. The thing about the NBA is that the athleticism in the league is just sickening good. Athletes on offense always have an advantage to athletes on d. The defense in the NBA is pretty outstanding. I challenge you to watch an NBA courtside then tell me the defense is lacking. You won't be able to with a straight face.

I was referring to the idiots that say there's no defense in the NBA. My bad on the confusion.

Anybody who thinks Turgeon did anything less than a stellar job with the Ags this year REALLY doesn't understand basketball.

I honestly disagree. He did a good job, but it was hardly stellar. Look at how we built up our Ws. We beat Tech x2 (yawn), OUx2 (yawn), OSUx2 (yawn), and Mizzou x2 (they were an 11 seed). Our best victories were KSU when they were slumping horribly, Washington (10 seed), Temple (7 seed), and @CU (NIT). We lost to KU, BUx2, FSU, and tu x3. We had one signature win and that team was in a slump.

We got to the tournament because we got a few good but not great wins and we had zero bad losses. But make no mistake, whenever we had to play an upper crust team we lost. Is that that great? Just because a few talking heads expected us to finish 6th back in July before the season started?

I've already said I think he did a good job this season. But this worshipfulness just because we overachieved a tad seems misplaced. We are four years into the Turge era and we frequently don't even run plays. I understand that the NBA has a higher level of athletes, but the people on defense are less athletic too. It seems like we could mimic a lot of the things that NBA teams do, just at a slower speed and with a lower success rate.

Consistency matters and the fact that the Ags were practically perfect against teams with lesser athletes says a lot about the tremendous job he's done.

As far as the offense goes, Turgeon's fully committed to a motion offense and that's what they ran this season. As others have pointed out, in a motion offense, it is pretty important to have that guy on a team who can breakdown a defense singlehandedly if a motion breaksdown... the Ags simply just didn't have a guy like that this season. What exact 'plays' would you like Turgeon to implement?

Bottom line, considering the Ags lost probably their 3 best offensive players last season, I think the offensive coaching problems many love to complain about is greatly overblown. In fact, when you consider that Khris Middleton went from bench player to the team's best scorer and a player many consider a legit first round NBA prospect in 2012 in one season just speaks really loudly about Turgeon's coaching.

Must be Turge's hired TexAgs observer.

***I don't dispute that overall, Turgeon did an acceptable and maybe even moderately good job this year, mainly with our defense.

But come on. We did not run plays. Our offense on 75% of possessions went as follows:

-Make 4-5 passes outside the time line with no one cutting or coming off a screen.
-Throw it to Lobeau 10 feet from the basket and everyone stand still.
-Throw it back out to the time line.
-Dribble around until there are less than 10 seconds on the shot clock. Everyone watch the man dribbling.
-Throw up a contested jump shot and pray it goes in or that we get a tip in on the rebound.
-Occasionally run a pick and roll 22 feet from the basket with the pick setter never rolling toward the basket about 90% of the time---what the hell is that about?

That is not a motion offense, I don't care what you're used to.

***Middleton may very well play in the NBA one day.

However:

1. He really was not a bench player last year. Even before Roland went down and he became the starter, he was still playing over half the game, and sometimes played more than Roland.
2. Saying he is our best scorer, while accurate, is an overblown compliment. He averaged 14 points in 30 minutes per game while shooting 45% from the field and 36% from the arc. Those numbers aren't bad at all, but they certainly aren't impressive either.
3. 2012 draft projections are worthless at this point. If he were that great of NBA prospect, he'd at least be projected in the 2nd round this year. Any obvious NBA guys like Thompson who are staying in college next year will bump him back even more.
4. People were saying Middleton might be NBA worthy at the end of last season (mostly TexAgs, but a few commentators).

--Bottom line, Middleton improved slightly from last season, but it wasn't that much of a climb. As you pointed out, his stats mainly went up because we just didn't have anyone else to put the ball in the basket.

It isn't like Turgeon has developed Middleton's offensive game any. He is still a rather average jump shooter, has no post up game, and no off the dribble game.

Now back to the point of the thread.

There are very few college teams who run any type of X's and O's offense. (ours included)

Even the worst NBA teams get most of their points off of set plays and swinging the ball around based on the defense's rotation.

I was coming over here to bump this thread, but it looks like you beat me to it.

Ugliest game I've ever seen, though some of them came from a historically epic cold streak. Butler did produce some good open shots, but literally zero of them were staying down.

My conclusion: I love the Aggies, but I actually enjoy watching the Spurs (though the last 2 weeks have been tough)

Man, the game last night was a sad summary of what's happened to college basketball.
