They would be the only two teams to lose to an 8 seed in a 7 game series. Epic failure.

The only reason it's getting this much discussion is because it happens to be the Mavs and Spurs.

I actually dont see anyone talking about this being an "epic failure" by the Spurs. Everyone is more apt to say its a validation that they're not really that good.

I'm not trying to say they are the same, this is worse. Regular season best record, 4-time champs, getting knocked out by a team that never even won a playoff game before. How's that better?

Unbelievable that dumbass Melty is trying to say that what the Spurs are doing is "worse" than the Mavs. So stupid. The Lakers were -225 to win the West. The Mavs were the favorite to win the West the year they got fisted by the Golden State Warriors.

When people nit pick two words out of an entire statement that belies the intended meaning, it's incredibly annoying. My original point was essentially: it's stupid to argue about which team losing to an 8 seed is worse, as they're both bad.

If you're really this defensive about classifying this as an "epic failure" for the Spurs, that's your business. Finishing with the best record in the west (could have easily finished with the best record in the NBA if not for resting players), and then losing to the 8th seed is an epic failure. It was for the Mavericks and it will be for the Spurs if they lose.

This is a red herring. How long have they even HAD seven game series in the first round?

Also, you can hardly call it an "epic failure" when lots of people picked Memphis, including the Chuckster, because A) Memphis had a pretty good 2nd half of the season, B) the Spurs did not (relatively speaking), and C) Memphis was clearly a tough matchup for the Spurs this year (one of only a handful of teams to split the series or better with the Spurs).

If it is an "epic failure" to lose to a more/less evenly matched opponent, then maybe we should redefine the term so that it means something again.

why does everyone seem to forget the Grizzlies are playing without their best player- Rudy Carlton Banks Gay

how does that not factor into it.

it would unquestionably be an epic failure.

Yeah, it's bad. But I'm still going to argue it's not as bad as the Mavs. Call it being defensive if you want, I think that's worth defending. The Mavs have given us some of the biggest choke jobs in NBA history and I don't want the Spurs mentioned in the same vein.

Longer than when the Mavs lost and BO erupted over that humiliation.

The amount of crawfishing here is just astounding. When the Mavericks lined up to play the GSW in 07, I was thinking it was going to be a tough series. If I'm not mistaken, GSW swept Dallas in the regular season. The writing was on the wall. They were the only team in the league that had our number, and we matched up with them in the first round. They were "evenly matched". I remember lurking on this board during the 07 meltdown and the Mavericks trash-talking was pretty epic. No excuses, this would be an epic failure for the Spurs, just like it was for the Mavs.

Okay. I guess I understand the need to be defensive. But losing to an 8 seed is losing to an 8 seed. Pitting excuses vs. excuses is stupid.

Either way, the series isn't even over yet. Could be moot anyway.

The Grizzlies have played their best basketball by far without Gay, that isn't a very good argument.

It would be a huge failure. Hard to argue that.

In arguments like this, it is important to note who brought up the idea in the first place. In this case, it was Mavsfan Muy in a pathetic desperation heave that will inevitably end in yet another meltdown.

>>The Mavs have given us some of the biggest choke jobs in NBA history and I don't want the Spurs mentioned in the same vein.<<

Mavs: 2 ('07 GS and '87 first round). Its difficult to call a 4-2 finals loss against a division winning 2 seed a choke. SOME of the biggest? Hardly. ONE of the biggest.

Spurs: at least 4, ONE of the biggest and 3 bigger ones than the Mavs (2011; 1995 -- loss to Rockets with 15 fewer regular season wins and 2 tough playoff series; 1992 -- GS with 11 fewer reg. season wins won a 2/7 series over the Spurs in 4; 81 -- 2nd seeded Spurs lost to Rockets with a reg. season losing record in their first playoff series; honorable mention -- 1978 playoff loss to the Bullets, a team with 8 fewer reg. season wins).

You also don't want the facts.
