If the Mavs would have retaliated, this board would say that they were dumb and have to be smarter than that. I wouldn't worry about it.

There are ways to retaliate without getting suspended.

Dirk reacted exactly how you would expect him to if you have watched him for the last decade.

The last thing we would want to see is the Mavs have a meltdown like the Suns when Diaw and Amare jumped off the bench. They were smart for not retaliating hard.

Mavs got the best retaliation possible:

So the Mavs did the right thing...but Dirk should have reacted more harshly? Huh?

The Mavs got no one suspended and moved on to the next round. Sounds like they did the right thing to me.

Bynum wasn't looking for a fight. He knew before the play it was his last play in the game. He *****ed out and threw down the smallest guy on the court, then he walked off.

Dirk didn't run halfway across the court and get up in someone's face like some have said, but I don't think anyone would expect him to. That isn't who he is. That is who Kendrick Perkins or Kevin Garnett are.

I'm glad we don't have a lot of guys playing in Texas that have to prove their manhood by getting up in someone's face and play fighting without actually doing anything. I think that song and dance is pretty *****y, but I'm not an NBA player, either.

The only thing you wan to do at that point is
1. Not get anyone suspended
2. Show Memphis/OKC that they can't push Dallas around.

Dallas accomplished the most important thing in 1.

It will be interesting to see how a more physical team plays against Dallas in the WCF.

HNIC's idea of toughness as expressed in his posts reminds me of the "When Keeping Real Goes Wrong" skits from the Chappelle Show (which, coincidentally, first aired about the same time HNIC developed his opinion of the Mavericks. Or rather, the same time he heard someone else express the opinion he now calls his own).

HNIC, you keep it real and keep equating tough talk and being goaded into confrontation with toughness. The Mavs will go on to the next round of the playoffs with a full roster.

BTW: in Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell elaborates on the "Culture of Honor" that exists most strongly in the south and is typified by things like the Hatfields/McCoys feuds but can also be seen by things like the NBA players (and fans) wanting the respect and honor that they feel like comes from standing up for themself. All kinda the same thing.

And maybe that's why the European players like Dirk tend to not react the same way Garnett or Perkins do.

it's cool. bynum has apologized

I want to apologize for my actions at the start of the fourth quarter of Game 4 against Dallas. They don’t doesn’t represent me, my upbringing, this franchise or any of the Lakers fans out there that want to watch us and want us to succeed. More importantly, I want to apologize to J.J. Barea for doing that. I’m just glad that he wasn’t seriously injured in the event. All I can say, now that I have looked at it, and it was terrible, is it definitely won’t be happening again.”

Is this the first time he's said this? This season?

He didn't apologize in March when he was suspended 2 games for the exact same thing?
