Convince me the Lakers becoming the new Heat is good for the NBA. I'm sorry, but as a casual fan this *****just turns me off from the league. That's part of what made the Mav's championship feel so good - beating the already anointed champions.

If we get to the point that it's just LA-Miami-Boston year in, year out, I think the NBA will find out just how fickle TV ratings can be.

Agreed. I also like it when the late greats like MJ, Chuck and Magic voice their displeasure with that as well.

The NBA has really fallen off now that those guys are all retired

It's not. If you really want to analyze it, this all started with Boston acquiring Kevin Garnett.

Parity went downhill after that.

Also, I don't think we'll see a championship like the Dallas Mavericks for a long while.

Your thoughts on why the NBA ratings spiked last year? Was the NBA better or worse in the 80s with the Lakers Celtics Pistons and Sixers loaded with All-stars?

Magic got drafted to the Lakers. Worthy is one of the most overrated players in NBA history. And Kareem was on the downside of his peak.

Don't get those good 80's teams confused with the teams like the 2011 New York Knicks whose two best players *****ed and moaned their ways out of their previous homes.

I hope you don't equate the increase in ratings with the quality of basketball being played. It's gotten so bad that the NBA is thinking of eliminating teams and markets. Think about that.

The OP is about general interest and ratings, not quality of basketball.

a one year spike does not make a trend. i think ratings will go up again this year (especially compared to estimates after the lockout) if the proposed LA "superteam" comes to fruition. but it will lose interest quickly.
