Better than the Perkins dunk?

Very impressive, but that was clearly an offensive foul. Still badass though

Well Gasol was inside the dashed circle, so no charge call. But maybe the elbow to the face should have gotten him something...

Yeah the elbow is what I was referring to. It wouldn't have been a charge for the very reason you just pointed out. But for somebody who wasn't named Blake Griffin that dunk is probably negated by an offensive foul.

But again, like I said, when I saw that it was unbelievable. The guy is a freak, and I'm not trying to take anything away from that dunk. That's just my opinion

I almost think this is better... He is so high.

Still only worth 2 points. Clippers lost, Gasol torched Griffin after that.

Highlight culture...

Prayerag the charge circle is negated if the offensive player starts his move from below the second hash mark.

Complete 100% offensive fouls. Both of them

Gasol jumped on the first one. No charge if he jumps.

The second one was absolutely over the back.

It's not the charge to me but the forearm to the face (with tons of force) that makes it a foul.

Awesome dunk. Should of been a foul.

the "over the back one" was questionable. probably shouldve been a foul, as Gasol is allowed to jump straight up to secure the rebound, and Griffin threw his legs into his back. but he was so high, it was a bit harder to see.

the second one is absolutely unequivocally a foul. im still shocked that he got away with it. it couldve damn near been a flagrant offensive foul.

kudos to Pau for outplaying him and getting the W when he got posterized.

I honestly think the only reason why it wasn't an offensive foul was because of the way the crowd reacted and how the Clippers all rushed to congratulate Griffin. The refs would have received quite a bit of hell if they took away that dunk from him, and I honestly just think that they didn't want to deal with that. That's the only explanation I can think of, because it seemed pretty obvious that it was a foul, yet all three refs seemed to miss it

Pau: 38 mins. 5-9 for 12 points. 7 Rebs
Griffin: 36 mins. 7-16 for 15 points. 14 Rebs

You have a strange definition of "outplaying"

Pau was a +7 including a big block on Griffin in the final 9 minutes of the game. his defense on Griffin was nothing short of stellar during crunch time.

h2h, Griffin was a -16 for his team. he was probably the least productive player on the floor for the clippers. he had 8 points in the second half on 6 shots with 2 turnovers.

in the final 5 minutes of the game against Griffin Gasol had 3 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block. Gasol's play against him was great considering he could've folded (he's done that before)

The refs gathered to have a conference over which player had higher status.

It was Griffin in a Clippers jersey vs. Pau in a Laker's jersey and they needed to know the pecking order. Had it been a playoff game and the Lakers down 2-1, Pau would have gotten the call.

If D. Wade was on defense, Griffin might have been given a flagrant.

pau jumped and put his arms into griffins body on the one where griffin elbowed pau, should be a no call if anything

on the other one it was def an over the back and should be a foul call, pau didnt help himself any though, if he wasn't fixated on watching the ball and actually boxed out he would have either stopped the dunk or def gotten the foul call though

Mike Mathis (NBA ref of 26 years) on ESPN 710am-

quote:
[On the second dunk]I think it was pretty easy to determine last night and actually delivered a blow to Gasol's head. Without this move he would not have been able to dunk it. Without a doubt this is an offensive foul.

The first dunk is more questionable. Leaving your feet means nothing, moving backwards means nothing. The defender can be moving backwards. It comes down to the basic premise of basketball. As long as Pau is there at that position first, that's his spot. There's no rule that says a player has to move. The charge circle is irrelevant because Griffin started his basketball move below the hash mark.

The book says that a person is there in a defensive position, that's his position from floor to ceiling, and is part of the rule of verticality.

By definition, [the first dunk] should've been an offensive foul.

The biggest problem is the lack of accountability in referring today. This is the biggest cause for missed calls in today's game.

Maybe??? It absolutely was. Clear as day.

That said, still extremely impressive.

I'm with simplebay on this one(I know, blasphemy). The athleticism of his dunks are crazy, but those were both fouls.

here's how you dunk on someone without committing an offensive foul

anddd using your off arm to stabilize or clear out the defenders arms is a foul:

Vince Carter definitely used his off arm to push-off.

Kevin Durant over Haywood in last year's WCF is another good, clean dunk.

I saw that dunk from about 15 feet away (Durant/Haywood). Boomtown.

All I know is...

-Big Dunk
-Refs talked about it
-No offensive foul call
<Insert conspiracy theory here>
-Sportscenter Highlight

Was definitely a missed call, but those happen pretty regularly. Hopefully, they can watch these types of dunks more closely going forward. But I'm confident it will still be considered one of the top dunks of 2012...

Start at the 47 second mark on the original link. Keep an eye on Bynum in the bottom right of the screen. Love his reaction.

On the first one Gasol was late on the rotation and initiated the contact.

Durant had a nice dunk? I don't remember. I just remember him choking in game 4 and Dirk being Dirk.
