Exactly. It's killing you that the Spurs have won and won and won. Just when you thought their run of contending teams was over, it's not. So many threads about the Spurs. So much talk about the Spurs. Why can't your team (I'm guessing you're a Houston guy, though I could be wrong. Personally, I'm a fan of all the Texas NBA teams.) win like that? You are seriously damaged. Just let it go, man. Learn to appreciate the greatness of Tim, Tony, Manu, and Pop. You'll have more fun. Don't worry, it won't last forever. It never does. SA is easily the most popular NBA team in Texas. It's got the Hispanic market cornered, and pretty much the southern half of Texas.

I'd love for you to name 8 Texas teams more popular than the Spurs.

Dallas - Cowboys, Mavericks, Texas Rangers
Houston - Texans, Rockets, Astros
Aggie Football, Longhorn Football

Popularity is overrated anyhow. The Rangers are probably the most popular team in baseball right now but what exactly have they accomplished?

I'll continue to root for my ever-so-unpopular Spurs. Each title they win is a big, fat "FU" to the popularity contest.

Also, it is funny how on this thread, somebody incinuates that the league office tries to manipulate the schedule to keep the Spurs from winning (to "protect the product"), because they are so boring, whereas on another thread, there are people arguing that all of the Spurs titles have asterisks because they were too easy.

All those teams you just mentioned, add up their championships since 1999. What number did you come up with?

Steve McQueen hit the nail on the head completely. It is horrible for the league as a whole when the spurs are in the finals. The ratings plummet every time they're there. The most boring franchise in any of the major sports. It's just the way it is.

Silly me. I thought it was about winning, not popularity. If it's all about popularity for you, you should be a big Longhorn fan.

murphy, when the celts and lakers finally met up again in the finals, i have to admit, it was some of the WORST played, boring basketball i've seen in a long time. both of those teams looked like a couple retards with pickle jars on their hands trying to play catch with a broken nerf football. talk about boring.

if i were a spurs fan I wouldn't give a **** how they won as long as they won, but I also wouldn't be so blind as to not acknowledge the fact that nationally nobody gives a **** about san antonio.

And I wouldn't constantly try to beat people over the heads with their "relevance". I would just accept it, watch the games,be happy when they won, and then stfu about it.

i don't know what the **** you think you were watching, but if you thought they were boring you obviously don't know **** about basketball.

Celtics/lakers has gotten the highest ratings every time they've met in the finals since those statistics started being tracked. Celtics/lakers pulls in people that don't even watch basketball

the sport as a whole is at it's best when both these teams are elite, there is no debating that.

SA is a small market team, of course they have a relatively small fan base compared to cities several times their size. So what? I don't know how any rational person would say that the Spurs' style of basketball is "boring" this year either. They play a beautiful game, score a ton of points, and have one of the most exciting players to watch in the NBA with Manu (not even counting 2 other future HoF'ers in Duncan and Parker).

What you left out though is that in SA and South, it is all about the Spurs. Part of the reason no other sports team has come there is it is a town that is so dedicated to that team and the Spurs are a victim of their own success. People in SA have grown up watching the Spurs be successful consistently, have some of the greatest players of all time, and have an organization and players that are so integrated with the community. For me I grew up watching George Gervin and being in awe of what he could do, one of my most prized possessions is my signed "Ice Man" poster. Then followed the Robinson era and of course now Duncan. The Spurs are a great example of an organization that has had incredible success against all the odds, they are the only ABA team that has truly put itself in the elite of the storied NBA franchises. Are they the greatest or best? No, but they have an awful lot to be proud of and have done several things no one else has in terms of sustained excellence.

All the other Texas franchises have to share. The Mavs fans are also Ranger/Cowboys fans. The Rockets fans are also Texans/Astros fans. Not many of them would list the bball teams as their favorite either. Not so for many Spurs fans, they are the only show in town in SA and the city lives for them. It is the greatest single source of pride for San Antonio, they are deeply ingrained as a part of the culture in the same way the Packers are with Green Bay. The fact they have always succeeded with less makes the bond stronger.

All of the haters of the Spurs are the worst kind of jealous. The Spurs' organization is about as well run and classy from top to bottom as you could ever hope for a pro franchise to be. They have always won quietly and without any help, they just win. Eventually they will falter if for no other reason than Pop and RC can't continue on forever and it never lasts in perpetuity but the accomplishments are amazing. People don't hate Green Bay for being a small market team that succeeds. People don't hate the Tampa Bay Rays either. I don't get the hate for the Spurs.

That doesn't change the fact that there probably aren't as many avid Rockets and Astros fans combined as there are Spurs fans. Anyone saying the Spurs are the 8th most popular sports team in Texas is an idiot or a troll, but probably both.
