It wasn't just a couple of local beat writers. There was a significant contingent (not half or most, but plenty of noise) of fans who made the case that the Spurs did not need two centers (which is what Duncan was viewed as at the time and still is by some), especially since they had their beloved David Robinson.
Those people did not believe their game would mesh well together if they were both on the court at the same time. Their contention was that Van Horn would help spread the floor and give Robinson room to work in the post. At the time, it at least sounded plausible. Van Horn really was by far a better outside shooter.
I'm sure the Spurs never had any intention of considering KVH, but there was at least a stir about it locally and in the media.
And yeah, my main point was, just think of how crappy of a decision that would have looked like in retrospect.
