okay

Bond, you don't know much about basketball, Kareem was the point guard and Magic was the center.

Steve,
Nice try calling me out but Magic was a guard/forward. NOT a center

Good for the Mavs. As much as I love Nash, he's not indicative of the direction we need to be moving as a team.

And what direction is that exactly? I mean it started with no Chandler, Barrea, or Stephenson, now no Williams, Howard, Nash, Drogic (sp), Terry...Is Cuban trying to pull a move from "Major League"? Making the Mavs so bad that he can move the team somewhere?

I hate the Lakers. Sadly, I think this makes them a strong contender next year if Kobe allows Nash to be the facilitator

Having Nash and Dirk closing out their careers together would have been fitting. And if the Mavs could of picked up a decent 5 and re-signed West, that would of made for a decent starting rotation.

Nash, Kobe, Bynum, Gasol is a pretty damn good foursome. They might even be the favorites now in the West, especially if World Peace can keep from getting into too much trouble. Definitely LA or the Thunder.

Signed for 3-year $25M. In return, Suns get 2 likely 1st-round picks, 2 2nd-round picks and $3.1M in cash.

This puts LA on Miami's level.

Definitely. That interior will give the Heat fits. With Nash QBing, I can see the Lakers beating the Heat.

I don't think LA is done. Nash puts them around 88 mm in salary.

That puts them ~18mm over the luxury tax line - something Buss doesn't want to pay (which is why he gave Odom away for a 2nd round pick last year.) The repeat offender tax starts at $2.50 per $1 over and goes up to $5 per $1 over. That's a lot of extra cash. (It either goes into effect this year or next year.)

^^^^ which is why he's tryin like hell to unload MWP and Gasol

Which makes them a much weaker team.

$7,258,960 is going out the door when Artest gets amnestied.

i also expect mcroberts to be moved.

Kupchak would be an idiot to move Gasol now. Nash/Gasol were born to play on the court together, as they may be 2 of the top 5 smartest on-court awareness players in the NBA. ability to make plays for each other.

would be retarded to move gasol now.

It's a great move, because it was the best possible move they could make. Dwight is out because he is proving to be a head case on Metta's level. The Lakers are stuck with trying to win now as long as Kobe is around, so they have to go all in. Kobe maybe has 3 decent years left, and then I expect the Lakers to dump everybody, go young, and rebuild.

This doesn't make them better than OKC or Miami, but it at least makes it possible that they can contend next year. If OKC melts down, or LeBron gets hurt, somebody is going to take advantage. The Lakers now could be that somebody. That's a step up from where they were yesterday.

**** it. I'm a Lakers fan now. I want Nash to win a ring. I want Kobe vs Lebron. This is a big win for LA for a 1-2 year window.

I believe the bigger issue with being over the tax limit is being limited in mle money and being forcibly handicapped making trades once the CBA penalties start to kick in after 2014 or so. So it won't be a big issue for a couple years unless Buss just wants to save cash.

If they drop Artest, who else is playing wing for them? Gonna be pretty hard to compete against Durant/Harden/Westbrook or Parker/Ginobili or James/Wade when your only wing player is Kobe and you don't have a point guard that can guard anyone and you have no depth. This league is won and lost on the wings and LA would be dropping theirs.

The Lakers need to drop like 20mm.
Nash:8mm (8mm next year)
Kobe 28mm (30.5mm next year)
Gasol: 19mm (19.3mm next year)
Bynum 16mm (last year)
MWP: 7.3mm (7.7mm next year)
Blake 4mm (4mm next year)
McRoberts 3.1mm (final year)
Eyenga 1.2mm (2.1mm team option next year)
Ebanks 1mm (not guaranteed)
Jordan Hill 3.63mm (4.9QO next year)
3 open roster spots at $500k each

Even if you Amnesty MWP, you still have 10mm+ to lose. .

Or a mil for every shot/game. Such a stupid contract.

Jordan Hill is a FA and Lakers have a QO out to Darius Morris. MWP is the only amnesty target that would make any real dent in the luxury payment. It's going to be bad either way, unless they can pull another useless player with stupid contract (Walton) trade.

Statistically or revenue he generates for the franchise.

One you're kinda wrong and the other you're laughably wrong. No surprise either way
Guitarsoup

He just put up .430/.303 last year. His best years are behind him and talent wise, he isn't worth $12,000,000/year more than LeBron James.

Kobe's true shooting % placed him 35th in the NBA among SGs. His turnover rate placed him 38th. His PER was 17th in the NBA among all players. He can still sore, but he is much less efficient at it than he was when he was better.

Revenue is hard to argue. Kobe is super valuable, but even if he was traded, the Lakers would have no problem printing money.

If Kobe wants another ring, he should take a salary cut.

The Nash move is great for their offense and horrible for their defense and salary cap. They REALLY need to move Gasol (and his salary) for some younger, more athletic players.
Simplebay

Look Out the new CBA does not allow a restructuring of a players contract. Even if he wanted to, which he probably would considering he wants #6 more than anything , he wouldn't be able to take a pay cut.

After the luxury tax the Lakers payroll will be 110 million next year? That's a lot, but it's not like they will be losing money.
