http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/tim-duncan-cut-paycheck-half-san-antonio-spurs-161015938--nba.html

The dip was more or less sealed when San Antonio made a surprising trade-deadline deal in March to acquire former Spur (and, it should be noted, formerly disgruntled) Stephen Jackson, and his $10.6 million salary. Retaining Duncan with a double-figure salary would place four different Spurs (alongside Ginobili and Parker) in that realm, and that's just not good business sense.

Because a cap is a cap. And even if the Spurs wanted to go all out and dive into luxury tax territory, their flexibility in acquiring players would be greatly reduced.

Money matters to the Spurs, who rarely pay the tax. Duncan's new deal let the team re-sign guard Danny Green, keep Boris Diaw, take advantage of the last year of Jackson's time with the Spurs, re-sign Patty Mills and add 2009 pick Nando De Colo -- who you can trust is a real person because Mike Monroe wouldn't lead us astray.

Duncan's contract also puts the team in a good spot next summer, when it's time to extend Manu Ginobili's contract, and possibly match offers for center Tiago Splitter, who will become a restricted free agent.

"None of this cinches the fifth ring of Duncan's illustrious career. But with sound spending and a deep squad the Spurs have a chance. And because Duncan wasn't offended that the Spurs asked that he not approximate his last contract, he'll have a happy and deep team to work with.

Seems a fair tradeoff for all involved."

Here's to ya, TD!!

Not the first time Duncan has left money on the table for the benefit of the team in his career.

Just an awesome athlete.

not to agree with simple but did anyone really expect him to sign for $20+ a year. On the open market he is probably worth $13 a year at this stage but for duncan, who has more money than can be spent in 12 lifetimes in san antonio, it is obvious that if he is going to continue playing he is going to make it so he is playing for a competitive team and that should be commended.

no, we all very much expected him re-sign for a lot less than his monetary worth. the fact that simple can't stand the thought of admitting the spurs are possibly the best run organization in the league makes his blood boil, so much so that he chimes in on every single spurs thread on this forum.

Why would he want to live in a ghetto town like SA for half the money he was making before?

ghetto town? dump?

Wow, so much drama. Big D, H-town are that much better, pleazz.

Many players have commented on what a nice place SA is to live & work. I get it's not LA or Miami if you like that scene, but try not to be such drama queens. It's a nice town with entertainment options, some good restaurants and the Hill Country is booming for a reason.

LOL he went from $21 million to $9.65 million.

Cry me a river on his "paycut". Props to him for being a team player, but it's easy to do once you've made about $150 million.

Bmart, I live in SA and love it. I was sarcastically making fun of the people who trash SA because they think it's the cool thing to do.

This is true. It should also be said that he took a pay cut because he isn't all that good anymore.

as someone who grew up in Arlington and doesn't like the spurs at all, San Antonio isn't anymore more of a dump than dfw or Houston. they all have their ghetto parts, but all have their really nice parts. plus most of the spurs live NW of SA around dominion, the richest and nicest part of SA. I love the hill country, best part of Texas. at least SA has that going for it. Houston is too ****ing flat, even dfw has some hills for God's sake.

Obviously some of you ladies have a scale issue. Convert to percentages, if you can, and apply to your own salary.

Exactly. If any of us were only able to do our job half as well as we used to, we would expect to be fired and hope for jobs as walmart* greeters. That would be a pay cut of way more than half, so Duncan is actually very lucky. He was overpaid at the end of his last contract, and gets to keep his job while making a nice salary, at an age where many of his coworkers are out unable to find any work.

If you don't think TD could have made more money as a free agent this year as opposed to what he signed for, you know nothing about professional sports.

Where did I saw anything about his current open market worth in the NBA?

I was just comparing the percentage of paycut he took in terms of our jobs and salaries.

Quantum - your comparing apples to oranges. Most professional athletes are overpaid when it comes to "job" performance. Also, most people in the "real" world actually increase their job productivity as they age and gain experience. Plus, I would say that Tim is very fortunate as opposed to being "lucky."

No, claym compared apples to oranges, and I stated that if you are comparing apples to oranges, he is lucky to have a job.

The point is he didn't have to. How many players in his situation do you think take that much of a pay cut? Jeez, give credit where credit is due.

Yes, he's still very good actually. Not what he was, but still among the best pfs in the game. He isn't 12 million dollars worse.

Again, why can't some of you just give credit where it's due. There are very few who would take that much less

And even if you do compare it that way, how in the world is he lucky to have a job when he's one of the top 10 or so players at his position in the world?

FYI Duncan had the 3rd highest salary in the league. Yes, he would have taken a pay cut regardless. He probably could have played on another team for $15 million or so. The writing was on the wall and he chose a 3 year $30 million to keep the team together instead of forcing a trade to keep him or simply leave.

I applaud him for it, but he's very wealthy already and loves SA. There is also the new CBA that factored in this.

I think the Duncan fans are blowing any neutral or non-suck up comment way out of context.
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm pretty sure saying a guy who averaged 17.4/9.4/2.8 with 2.1 bpg and 49.5% from the field in the playoffs is "lucky to have a job" goes well beyond neutral commentary.
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
FWIW, that means that in the playoffs Duncan was top 10 among forwards in ppg, fg%, rpg, apg, a/t ratio, and bpg. He was 3rd in efficiency among forwards and 9th overall.

He's still one of the most well-rounded and productive players in the NBA. Not worth 20mm anymore, but he could have gotten 15mm.
