He signed for a little less than Garnet. And I would argue that Timmy had a better year. He's kept himself in great shape and is still probably the 3rd or 4th best center in the NBA.

I think he could have gotten more on the open market but not much more.

Bottom line: There are very few teams in the NBA that have:

1) The cap space to spend that much on an aging veteran like Duncan.

2) The need for an aging veteran like Duncan.

You're praising him for taking the best offer he could get, which is ridiculous. He wasn't getting 13 million from ANYONE. He got 10 from the Spurs. The teams that he could get that deal from either already have a PF that's nearly as good or better, cheaper and younger. That, or they're teams that have no chance to win a championship even if they do add Duncan and there's no reason to sign him.

He had one and only one true option and he got the best out of the Spurs that he could. Did his pay get cut? Yes, but not for the sake of the franchise, but rather due to a lack of options.

Name one team that has the cap space and the desire for a player like Duncan and would shell out 10mil+ for him. Won't be able to find one.

Praise Duncan for being a model NBA player and a hall of famer, not for some false story about how he's sacrificing for his team. This is akin to people praising Tom Brady for restructuring his contract (which essentially amounts to him getting the same amount, but in a more cap friendly way. Way to go Tom, PR battle won).

No, claym compared apples to oranges, and I stated that if you are comparing apples to oranges, he is lucky to have a job.

Simplebay has competition.

Good post players are worth more than you realize. The players listed below are all making 12mm or more.
Elton Brand
Zach Randolph
Al Jefferson
Carlos Boozer
Marc Gasol
Tyson Chandler
Emeka Okafor
Brook Lopez
Khris Humphries
Josh Smith
Al Horford
Nene
LaMarcus Aldridge
Andrew Bogut
David Lee

I'm not saying Duncan is still a top 5 post player in the league, but he is better than several guys on that list. Tim Duncan is still a smart 7' PF/C who can play post and help defense at a high level, score with his back to the basket, triple threat from the elbow, and stretch the D with a consistent 18' jumper. His per minute stats are still great and his playoff numbers last year reflect that. Because Duncan's game is not predicated on athleticism, age is not as much of a factor for him as it is for other posts.

I suspect that he probably cost himself about $2MM/yr with SA by coming out and saying that he's not signing anywhere else. But he had no reason to leave, loves SA, and is royalty there for life. I honestly can't imagine why he'd leave, so I'm guessing the Spurs named their price on this one.

For what it is worth, I've come to like Duncan. I hated him for a long time, but it was only because he was so damn good. He's a good dude and may have done as much for SA as Col. Travis when it's all said and done.

For my money, he is on a short list of the most respected players in NBA history.
