I'm with you on track, but I think you underestimate gymnastics coaches. They teach the athletes the routines, and they have to select the proper routine based on the athletes mental and physical state. They have to be prepared for many different circumstances and modify them based on how the competition is going.
For instance, during a round of individual events you would probably want them to do the hardest routine possible because everyone is focused on that event and you need to be awesome to medal. But during team events, a screw up on a hard routine can ruin a team's chances and shake confidence. And some of those coaches have to deal with the emotional states of half-a-dozen adolescent girls. You couldn't pay me enough.
