It is a LOT to give up. But Gasol is going to be owed a LOT next year. It gives them more flexibility long term.

He would be a pick and roll monster with Nash, but Bynum is better on offense. Pau is way better on offense. Bynum could probably be 75% as good as Howard on D, if he tried consistently. Pau doesn't play D.

I think it might be a wash, and again, Howard has shown himself to be a real head case over the last year. Kobe will tell Meta to cut Howard the first time they see him in tears over a twitter message in the locker room.

Btw, if all the lakers gave up was Bynum and a first, without having to take on a bad contract, then they did very very well on this deal.

Bynum is the second best center in the NBA. Almost definitely more skilled offensively.

It is financially best for Howard and Bynum to NOT sign extensions.....and the re-sign with their respective teams.

Howard would have to leave 25MM on the table and playing with Kobe/Nash/Pau to go play with Dirk.
