Am I the only one who thinks Nash and Howard are overrated?

Howard actually hasn't ever had a top 10 scoring season to this point.

I think we can all agree that he is easily the best center in the NBA right now. He is not overrated in that regard. He is a great player.

Its when you start comparing him to great centers of the past that he does not measure up. I'm not sure I would put Zo above him, but Dwight Howard today would not be in the top tier of great centers we saw in the 90s.

To be fair, thats a group that includes how many Hall of Famers? 4 or 5? I think its a testament to Dwight that he is in that conversation already. I don't know that he ever gets to Shaq, Hakeem, or Robinson level, but I think he is definitely on a Hall of Fame track and will be thought of as a better player than a guy like Ewing.

Ewing never gets respect. The poor guy just came along at the wrong time. Cap, Moses, Shaq, Hakeem and Robinson were all better than him. If he was playing today, he would be the best center in the league.

At 26 years old I put Dwight behind those guys, but he has a lot of basketball left to play. He wins some championships, MVPs, and conyinues to develop it will be a fun conversation.

I still think he's overrated. That doesn't mean he isn't a great player. That just means he's not as great as many make him out to be. I'm sorry but I just don't see him being the difference for the Lakers. The Lakers already had Bynum and Gasol over the last two years. Are they going to be significantly better with Howard and Gasol? I just don't think they will.

When the Lakers landed him many immediately made them the favorites. That's why I'm saying he's overrated.

Howard is a fantastic addition. He's a freak who brings 40+ minutes of outstanding defense every night (compared to temperamental Bynum who took plays off all the time). His offensive game isn't as developed as it could be, but he's hardly a liability out there. He's got some decent moves near the hoop and he's athletic enough to dunk on everybody. The clincher is that he doesn't have much of an ego when it comes to offense. He doesn't get pissy if he gets 16 rebs and only 8 shot attempts. That'll be important since Kobe still thinks he should be taking 25+ shots/game.

I don't know about Nash. He turns 39 in a couple months and I don't think he has much left in the tank, but we'll see. LA should consider themselves winners if they get 1 good year out of him.

I agree. Howard is a perfect compliment to Bryant/Gasol/Nash. Doesn't need a lot of plays called for him so Kobe will be happy, but he'll still get 12-15 a game on lobs, putbacks, and the occasional glaring mismatch. He's no Duncan in the low post when it comes to polish, but he's still very tough to stop when he decides to score against single coverage. No one in the NBA has two posts that can match up with Gasol and Howard, so if the Lakers decide to grind it out in the post they can. Gasol/Bynum was a ridiculous frontcourt; Gasol/Howard is downright unfair. Bynum may have just as much potential as Howard, but Howard (in spite of occasional whining) has done a lot more for a lot longer and with a much better attitude.

Nash will be fine once he gets healthy. He's got plenty of shotblocking support to erase his defensive shortcomings, and he's always been successful because of his brain rather than athleticism.

The real wrench in the works is Mike Brown. He's a terrible offensive coach, and I can see him either screwing things up really badly or failing to control the situation when Kobe or Artest go off the rails.

Just to be clear, Howard will get 12-15 a game if ALL he gets are lobs, putbacks, and the occasional glaring mismatch. Add a few called plays and he's up around 18-20 points a game.

Nash is definitely overrated.

If anything Nash is underrated. Most people don't recognize him as the greatest shooter of this generation. He's one of the few high volume scorers to ever go 50/40/90
Ulrich

Overrated in that he can't carry a team to any real success anymore, underrated in that he's a fantastic shooter. His passing and offensive leadership are correctly rated. However, is he a fit with Bryant and Mike Brown? Not so sure.

Simplebay, haven't you spent the last 3 years screaming that Howard is overrated every time you argued that Bynum is better?

Howard has always been better than Bynum. But Bynum does have better offensive moves

I remember something similar, Ulrich. Laker's should have never let Sessions go. They would easily be 4-0 right now.

Hey, funny thread I found.

Simple, I'd say you should hurry up and edit out where you said "Andrew Bynum is better than Dwight Howard", but I don't believe you can edit thread titles.

By the way, to follow up on the original stats you posted to back up the assertion, the final stats for that season:
Howard:
18.3 ppg
13.2 rpg
1.8 apg
.9 spg
2.8 bpg
59.2% FG
61.2% FT
82 games played

Bynum:
15 ppg
8.3 rpg
1 apg
.5 spg
1.4 bpg
57% FG
73.9% FT

Funny, I can clearly see sarcasm everywhere and a "....so far this season"

But good effort

People usually start a new thread that clearly states a hypothesis and backs it up with a list of statistics just to be sarcastic. Nice spin.

I called DH a HOFer in 2010 when Rockets fans were still disparaging him as a wildly overrated player who was pretty good at defense but atrocious offensively. But I guess now that you've all leaped from "Howard sucks" to "it doesn't even matter who else is on the roster, Howard+Harden=contender", I don't know anything about basketball and you're all geniuses.

Looks like every Rockets fan on this thread has been defending him and recognizing his talents for quite some time

This is two years after the time period I mentioned. Back in 2010 you were all so hot to prop Yao up as the best C in the league that you were beating on Howard. Soup actually ttted the thread I was referencing earlier today.

Yao was better than Howard when Yao was healthy, just FYI.

Howard is underrated if anything. People think he's not great because his team hasn't won a title, but his playoff numbers are absurd. His best teammates have been who, The Incredible Vanishing Rashard Lewis, the ghost of Hedo Turkoglu, and Jameer "pretty good but not great" Nelson.

18.4 points on 57.7% shooting with 13 boards and 2.2 blocks in the regular season
19.9 points on 60% shooting with 14.4 boards and 2.8 blocks in the playoffs
3x DPOY
Led the NBA twice in blocks, 4 times in rebounds, once in FG%, and I suspect he had a couple top ten scoring seasons as well but that's tougher to check on without getting to a computer.

Great numbers, elevates his game in the playoffs, defensive gamechanger, and carried a mediocre team the the ECF twice and finals once. Not a bad resume.

I love this post Ulrich.
