I would hazard a guess that he is also a Yankees, Notre Dame, Duke and Cowboys/Steelers/Packers fan (pick one?) but I'm not sure.

It's nothing alike. As the poster above me said, rooting for in state teams is pretty common. I'll root for the rockets, texans, and Astros over anyone besides the cowboys, spurs, and rangers come playoff time. Don't give a darn about them during the regular season, but come playoff time it's still fun to root for them over the likes of the lakers, the Yankees, or the giants.

Most NBA fans are not incredibly serious about their fandom (especially in Texas). Ive followed the Spurs for quite a while, but I didn't mind seeing the Mavs win a championship.

I enjoy the NBA a lot as well and I would sure rather have a Texas team win a title over Ray Allen, LBJ and Wade.

i am definitely a hard core NBA fan. But college really made me not like dallas mavs fans. That 2006 and 2007 seasons were insufferable during the regular season for me.

If Mavs fans in 06/07 were so bad, what would you call the "sleepy" spurs fans now? I dislike the Spurs for basically the same reason: insufferable arrogance from the fanbase. Anytime a Spurs fan would cathch you rooting for the Mavs (before 2011 at least), they'd be the first ones to be like, "lol, no rings", "Dirk chokes", etc. I don't get why Mavs fans get all this flak, and yet Spurs fans don't for doing the same dang thing. If you want to say "well, they got 4 rings on you", why do I never see Lakers fans doing that, arrogant as some may be?

Most "mavs fans" I know have disowned them and have jumped wholeheartedly onto the Rangers bandwagon. They just happened to not really be all that interested in baseball until fairly recently.
