In no specific order:

Len Bias
Pete Maravich
Jay Williams
Yao Ming
Penny Hardway
Hank Gathers
Bill Walton

Who was the biggest waste/loss ever?

Greg Oden.

If I remember correctly, Greg shot free throws left handed due to an injury to his right hand his only year at OSU. I think he was close to 70%.

Another one is Sam Bowie

Sabonis

Sort of under the radar, but Vin Baker just fell off the map after being a multiple-time All-Star...alcohol.

Micheal Ray Richardson and Roy Tarpley were coulda/shoulda been great players who got sidetracked by drugs.

Grant hill would be my pick. Guy could do it all.

Grant Hill is probably still a borderline hall of famer due to his college work.

A shame about what coulda been with his pro career, but at least he was able to contribute for a long time, unlike some guys.

I'll say Penny Hardaway, Brandon Roy, and Oden. Even if the Heat win a ring with Oden on the roster, he will be the definition of coattail rider, through no fault of his own.

Keep in mind that in a 5 year span during his prime from age 28-33, Grant Hill played 135 of a possible 410 of his teams games. That was coming off a season where he averaged 26/6/5.

I see Sabonis in a similar light as Grant HIll. Both could have been the GOAT or at least in the conversation but injuries (and circumstances for Sabonis) prevented that, yet they still had stellar careers despite those circumstances.

I never liked Grant Hill (for similar reasons as Jalen Rose, not a knock on his game).

Sabonis and Petrovic would've been an all time greats.

Penny Hardaway was always fun to watch.

Wasn't Sabonis late getting to the NBA anyhow?

Brandon Roy is a good one. Crazy how Portland got hit with him and Oden at the same time.

Man Brandon Roy is a good one. In the Portland/Rockets series I remember thinking that guy was thenext great guard and the Blazers klooked ridiculous with him Oden and LMA.

Penny and Hill are the biggest recent ones.

Bill Walton, hands down. Three time NCAA player of the year. MVP and champion in his first two seasons. Then he spent more time on injured list than anybody in history.

I haven't seen Bernard King mentioned. He was special.

I don't count self-inflicted problems like Roy Tarpley.

Yes, after he was already broken.
Knee problems among other things. He was a freak of an athlete as a young man. Its hard to make a comparison because he was 7'3" but he was as agile as most 6'8" players are today.

Hill might have been Jordan or Bryan great, he certainly has their work ethic. He still had a amazing career considering the injuries.

I think I read from a Grantland article that there was a Bucks player from the 50's, Maurice Stokes, who was kind of like the Lebron of his day, huge, skilled, and quick. He hit his head in a game, and the injury degenerated to the point that he bacame paralyzed. THank God for the medical advances we have today.
