The Spurs could have won the title in 04, but it wasn't guaranteed. The Pistons were a damn good team. In 06, though, I feel like the Spurs had a 90+% chance of beating Miami. Bowen would have harassed Wade into mediocre games and the rest of the team wasn't capable of picking up the slack.
And last year was just... ugh.
The Spurs were 2 plays away from 6 titles and another play away from a great shot at #7. And hell if Duncan hadn't injured his knee in 2000, there's no telling what would have happened. At that point, the Lakers weren't quite the juggernaut that they were in 01&02; the Spurs might have been able to beat them in 2000.
It just goes to show that winning a title requires a great team, great coaching, and a decent bit of luck too. A miracle shot here or there, an untimely injury, a stupid foul/foul call... these can all derail a title run. It's pretty wild to think that you wouldn't have to change very much to get the Spurs to 6-8 titles at which point they're up there with Jordan's Bulls and Russell's Celtics as one of the best dynasties of all time.
