Whomever votes always loves the crap to barely playoff worthy teams.

Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich, who I'd say are two of the top five coaches in NBA/ABA/whateverBA history, have combined for three COY awards.

It's a bunk award that's almost always handed to the feel good story of the year.

I expect to see Jason Kidd get a lot of votes for improving from a barely-competent coach to a mediocre one this season.

I agree that Pop is amazing and should have won more awards. Can't say I would have voted for Phil though, for the same reason I wouldn't vote for Spoelstra. When you have MJ/Pippen, Shaq/Kobe, or Lebron/Wade/Bosh, I have a hard time saying that you deserve coach of the year. Could Phil have done a great coaching job with less? Maybe so, but we will never know.

A guy like Hornacek will usually get the mention in a situation like these when there is a turnaround that exceeds expectations based on their roster.

Horny deserves it every bit as much as Pop. He took a team that looked like a tanking candidate and has won almost 50 games. Pop should get a Coach of the Decade award.
