But in all seriousness, I think it was all related to his buyout that the Spurs were not willing to pay at one time. Guitarsoup will probably know.

I wish he would've come in and taken over for Fab Oberto. Mcdyess and some of the other guys just never seemed to jell. We were also missing a solid wing defender for those years after Bowen left.

It was a lot more complicated than he "didn't want to be a spur" Lots of hurdles stood in the way with his European club at the time. The Spurs probably regretted not trying harder to make it happen but at the end of the day the Spurs would have had to pony up 10+M per year to keep him and he's never been worth that kind of money. (Rockets gave him 5 years 50M)

Sher is right. We passed on Scola originally and then went with Oberto (way cheaper) next time he became available.

Holt passed on him because he didn't want to get into the luxury tax and he was right on the cusp. Pop wanted to sign Scola and it is still a bitter subject with Pop.

Which led into a 5 year 50M contract. I stated the Spurs probably regretted the move because he was such a bargain his first three years but that later led to a huge contract and tough situation. If the Spurs would have ponied up that kind of money for him after his rookie contract then a lot of other things probably would not have happened.

Scola's club in Europe made it very difficult to deal with regarding his contract. They were threatening making the buyout amount for Scola up towards 10 - 15 Million which is outrageous. The Spurs tried to negotiate with the club and the club finally settled on a 3M buyout clause to let Scola go. Under NBA rules a NBA team can only provide up to $500,000 to help buy out players resulting in Scola having to pay 2.5M out of pocket if he wanted to leave his European team. Scola wanted more money from the Spurs if he was going to pony up all that money himself for the buyout and the Spurs couldn't go any higher on their offer because of the tax situation.

The Spurs ended up signing Oberto that year instead outright with no buyout situation to worry about. They later traded Scola to Houston and Scola's European club became a lot more sympathetic regarding Scola's NBA dream and became a lot easier to deal with therefore Scola became a Rocket.
