Tanking is a reason why I would be OK if potential free agents coming off their rookie deal didn't have a financial incentive to re-sign with their current team.

Hopefully in 2017, MCW gets the hell out of there.

The players I've heard of:
Joel Embid
Nerlens Noel
Jason Richardson
Michael Carter-Williams
Luc Mbah a Moute
Alexey Schved

They add a stud in the next draft, and they could be good in a a couple years.

Another funny Deadspin update

quote:
You almost certainly missed it over the weekend, but the Philadelphia 76ers made a big addition to their roster, scooping up free-agent forward Robert Covington. If you've never heard of Robert Covington, that's because he's an undrafted second-year player who had previously seen the floor in just seven NBA games, and the Sixers don't really like signing players anyone has ever actually heard of.

...

They have scored 100 points in a game just once, and the 88.5 that they are scoring is the worst mark in the league. Their offensive rating (91.15), which measures points scored per 100 possessions, is also worst in the league, almost seven full points clear of the Milwaukee Bucks. The Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that currently features two cardboard cutouts named Devin Durant and Ross Westbrook in its 10-man rotation, is scoring eight more points per 100 possessions than the Sixers.

The Sixers' current point differential is a staggering -16.9, a mark that will shatter the current single-season record of -15.2, if it holds throughout the year. And what's most ridiculous is that they're losing like this while playing philosophically sound basketball on both ends of the court. This is what a truly bad team looks like: a group of guys who are so terrible at basketball that they have no shot at winning even when playing the right way.

Covington isn't the only one. Having already employed nine undrafted players this season, the Sixers are just one more signing away from collecting more undrafted scrubs than any team in history. And wouldn't you know it, they are reportedly interested in signing former Syracuse big man Arinze Onuaku, who went undrafted in 2010.

...

This brain-melting display of no-****s-given is how we end up with guys like Hollis Thompson, Henry Sims, Brandon Davies, and Chris Johnson all playing 20 minutes a night. ****ing JaKarr Sampson is out here getting 11 minutes of run per game.
So almost their entire team is undrafted scrubs. The pros versus college question has always been a joke, but Kentucky really might be able to beat them. If you go down the rosters, Kentucky has more talent. The only question is whether a few extra years of experience would give the 76ers enough of an edge to win (and their team isn't very old, so even that advantage is minimized).

I haven't thought about it too much, but I don't currently have any objections to the concept of not having an NBA draft anymore. Rookies become eligible but then are basically normal free agents. Seems like that would cut down on tanking.

I get the point of resting nerlens, and tanking for embiid, and MCW, but at what point do they start trying? They have to know its going to take a couple of years to gel, even if they do stockpile talent, and by that point, these young guys are going to be able to leave.

I'm just gonna wait until a top 10 prospect gets an injury late this year, that will make him sit out a whole year, and know that's who they are drafting.

What free agent is going to want to go to a team where they have to babysit a bunch of 18-21 year olds?

Consider how weak the sixers are inside, and how talented Kentucky is in the post, and you see that UK has a clear path to victory, an easy exploit.

Instead of getting rid of the draft they should look at the relegation model used in soccer leagues. Bottom 2 teams get demoted to the D league while the top two D league teams take their place. Interesting concept to think about but it would never happen

Sixers would lose to some d-league teams
